Reacting to the wish of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada, to terminate the Early Learning and Child Care Program negotiated between the Government of Canada and the ten provinces, the current Government of Canada faces a protest tomorrow on the steps of Parliament Hill.

The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, the Social Development Critic for Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition, is to join Canadian women tomorrow, on International Women's Day to protest the cancellation of the program, that is seen by many of these women to be an affront to women's rights in Canada.

Telling a woman that she's free to pursue a profession when the child care spaces don't exist is like telling a kid they can play hockey as long as they don't leave their room. It's the illusion of choice."

Dr. Bennett argues, moreover, that the current Government of Canada does not have the mandate required to destroy the program; she notes that sixty-three percent of voters in the Thirty-ninth General Election voted for members who were in favour of the Early Learning and Child Care Program, negotiated by the Liberal Party of Canada and that, furthermore, the provinces want the programs to be retained.

Hank C, the entirety of her comments, and the article, are worth a read-through; the Honourable Carolyn Bennett makes some valid points — something to consider for a moment, at least.
