RE: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROB

Daniel Patrick Moynihan, USA ambassador to the United Nations writing in his book, A Dangerous Place:

"The [USA] Department of State desired that the United Nations prove utterly ineffective in whatever measures it undertook. This task was given to me and I carried it forward with no inconsiderable success."

RE: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROBLEM

Wow!

Perhaps we could transfer UN headquarters to the Holy Land? Hmmm... That might not be a bad idea actually! I can immagine how the constant artillery fire going on around the UNHQ daily might give UN ambassaders just that added motivation to solve the problem? ;)

Re: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROBLEM

Sadly lacking here Beaver....

Is the reason why the U.S. has voted against some of these resolutions.

Many of these expected the U.S. to ultimately finance the issue, or were directly against U.S. policy.

It is their right to vote against such measures.

Until the U.N. stops expecting the U.S. to fund them and fight all their battles, there will always be resistance.

And finally Moynihan was an ass and I wouldn't believe anything he writes - even his documentation of voting is skewed because he dismisses the reasons while condemning his own country.

He is typical of the mindset at the U.N. and his testimonial above demonstrates his own personal bias which is of course why he wrote his "book".

He started his career as an intellectual genius and gave us great promise for his vision, but in his decline he became embittered, cranky and probably exhibited the same kind of behavior as we now witness in Ted Kennedy - perhaps it is an Irish trait!

The 2004 items you place in your "accounting from his book" cannot be unless he was writing from the grave - he died in 2003.

RE: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROBLEM

How about this:

Move the UN out of the US, boot the US out, and then the US is free to do what it wants, while the rest of the world is free to do what it wants.

Sounds good?

Re: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROBLEM

Machjo

The U.S. is pretty much doing "what it wants" now.

If the world doesn't need the U.S. the people who are funding many of the l U.N. endeavours would be pleased to have the military and ancilliary services back home, and the money could be put to better use for the American people.

The only thing is that N.Y. building and I think it's time for another country to babysit the costly crew.

The original purpose of the United Nations would bring tears to your eyes and an ache in your heart when you comprehend how far they have wandered. They are an abomination to those who truly believe in peace.

Re: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROBLEM

Jay - I can hear Annan smacking his warlust lips too...

Just the fact he has requested military assistance in Darfur when the Sudan region is heavily mined and guarded by Communist China is an open invitation to a conflict.

We may end up with yet more Communist uprisings if the U.N. continues this quest.

And if the people of Darfur have been considered in any way other than publicity generating "lip service" I expect the sun to turn green.

I am throwing a huge party when Annan retires.

You know, Americans barely attribute any troops to the U.N. They have billions of dollars that they need to owe to the U.N.

So I think America might just have to leave if they don't think the U.N is useful. Pay all their fees and leave.

And don't say the U.N can't remain in New York, because the building isn't American territory it is international territory.

I wonder how many Euros vetos have taken place in the last decade. Seriously, would make an interesting comparision.

In the general assembly I am unsure, but in the Security council, I think America and Russia have been the only ones to every veto something that has to do with the Security Council.

RE: THE UN,s BIGGEST PROBLEM

This is all I could find so far:
Decisions in the 15-member Security Council on all substantive matters—for example, a decision calling for direct measures related to the settlement of a dispute—require the affirmative votes of nine members. A negative vote—a veto—by a permanent member prevents adoption of a proposal, even if it has received the required number of affirmative votes. Abstention is not regarded as a veto. Since the Security Council's inception, China (ROC/PRC) has used 5 vetoes; France, 18; Russia/USSR, 122; the United Kingdom, 32; and the United States, 80. The majority of the USSR vetoes were in the first ten years of the Council's existence, and the numbers since 1984 have been: China, 2; France, 3; Russia, 4; the United Kingdom, 10; and the United States, 42.

Granted, it is from Wikipedia

That's all very anecdotal - do you have the actual figures of commitment of U.S. forces to U.N. "peacekeeping?"

Please demonstrate how much money the U.S. actually owes the U.N. in legitimate dues! Not the numbers they keep flipping up for the public to read. Write to John Bolton and ask him. Or continue fabrication and innuendo. That's beneath your quest for accuracy.

The topic of annual dues - try to get a straight answer from the U.N. internet base. They always put a controversial number up every year and then wait for people like you to damn the U.S.

I guess the U.S. should send them a bill for the military action they have given - yes given - to the U.N. not to mention equipment and supplies - also given.

Regarding your comment about "barely attributing troops"....is a bloody insult to the men and women who have patrolled and are patrolling the DMZ - or do you not think that is a military action???

And the building - that is peanuts in what the U.N. is costing the world. You have no idea of what this current U.N. represents do you?

Oh, I know the U.N nowadays is corrupt, and needs reform. But when reforms were brought last year to stop the corruption, Americans and other nations made sure that these reforms would fail.

And it appears American corruption in Iraq may just be as bad as U.N corruption. At least 10 billion missing. Now, the DMZ is an area that was set up to keep apart the North Koreans and South Korea
