What don't you like about Conservative policies?

A question for the right-leaning members out there....(we know what the left would say - everything!) what about the Conservative party platform do you not like?

I'll start. I don't like that the Conservatives:
are against marijuana legalization
are very weak in the environmental policy (this should not be a right-left issue)
are not for some form of PR
support GST cut even though it flies in the face of good economic policy
are too influenced by the wacky Christian right

I'll try and think of more.

I don't like that the Conservatives:

1. never talk about their long term plans for medicare.

2. promise to cut taxes as well as increase spending. Doesn't seem reasonable to me before they are elected and know what the financial situation is.

3. want to take the country out of Kyoto

4. seem to want us completely tied to the U.S.

Points are valid and I could probably add a few myself, however this is the wrong forum for the negative side of Conservative philosophy is it not?

I hoped it could stay positive.

Perhaps I misread Andem's original thought farther down in the threads when he opened this place. Anyway I'll let you decide and put me in my place if I have made a mistake. It doesn't specifically say "positive" - but I hoped that was the idea. Thanks.

I agree, there are enough forums bashing conservatives.... what I'm interested in is a discussion amongst Conservative minded people about policies they disagree with.

For example, even the Fraser Institute (hardly a left wing group) came out for marijuana legalization. Why do the conservatives still oppose it?

And in this rush to the middle ground, some Conservative principles have been abandoned.

In an attempt to curry favour with the masses, they are supporting cuts in consumption taxes over income taxes, which economists agree is not the way to go.

As someone who is voting Liberal, I will add that I would be voting Conservative if the above were addressed.

Since you want no input from non conservatives, I will keep my other things I don't like to myself...

OK - I see where you are going - I misinterpreted the outcome - and a positive discussion could have some valuable stuff within. I'm in the U.S. so I don't really know about the conservative party in Canada and regarding my own philosophy I don't agree with many platforms the conservative party endorse in the U.S. either.

I hear about Stockwell Day banging on bibles....but nothing really of substance. Just the rhetoric campaign stuff and often it is usually negative. I hope to learn from this topic what it is all about north of the 49th.

But then I think with so many people, it is difficult to put everyone into one, two or three big boxes and say: There you are!

Everyone has a different idea which suits their lifestyle and their inner gut feelings. It's what I love about democracy!

I'm a Conservative Party member.

I support Stephen Harper.

I have some problems with Conservative Party policy, such as:

I think Marijuana should be legalized, never mind decriminalization.

I think anti-Terror legislation should be rescinded. Hell, if you think they are a danger to the country BOOT THEM OUT! Don't truncate my rights.

IMHO (and I know I'm in the minority) the CPC does not go nearly far enough in easing gun control restrictions. The Firearms Acts of 1934, 1978, 1992, and 1995 should be rescinded, and replaced with a tough licensing of owners for different types of weapons, and long jail sentences for the use of firearms in crime (NOT mandatory)

I don't like mandatory sentences.

All the above said, the CPC platform is far superior to any other.

While I am certainly not a conservative person, I would hope that if I keep my posts respectful, I would be welcome posting to this forum and the thread.

G.S.T., and other Tax Cuts

While I endorse much of the economic platform of the Conservative Party of Canada, I disagree on the issue of decreasing taxes; while so much of the Consolidated Revenue Fund is being paid into interest payments, I would assert that we should not be decreasing our national revenue through taxes; each and every dollar counts, in my opinion.

Abuse of Parliament

Under most circumstances, having watched many of the sittings of the House and its various Committees on CPAC, the Conservative Party of Canada conducts itself with an air of decorum and respect; however, during Spring of last year, they used some "questionable" measures to further their objectives. I would prefer that the Tories not shut down the House, never mind for three days consecutively, and that they do not deny quorum to Committees.

Property Rights in the Charter

Many would disagree, I am sure, but in my opinion, it would be dangerous to begin deeming property rights to be a fundamental right or freedom, in particular as enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In my opinion, while one should always have the right to exercise certain authority over one's property, such property should remain under the ownership of the Queen in right of Canada¹.

¹ "The Queen in right of Canada" is a more formal term to define the Government of Canada; I'm not trying to imply that Her Majesty should have any legitimate authority herself over private land, just to be clear.

I agree with much (not all) of the Conservative platform. I just don't agree with their foreign policy and support of the US.
