If I remember correctly the MST had different rates on different items. We used to put trailer hitches on vehicles and the tax system was bizarre. Lots of ways to cheat on it too. (legally) If you wanted a tow hitch built and installed , the MST applied to the whole thing. So we would sell the customer the metal (no MST)but PST, then charge him to build the hitch and there was no MST and at that time there was no PST on shop labour. There was a bunch of other weird things that I have forgotten about now.
Anyway as taxes go consumption taxes are much better than income tax. I consider income tax as a tax on ambition since the more you work the higher they tax you. Overtime should be tax free to encourage productivity.

Niflmir If the government really cared about reducing prices, they would force stores to include the gst in the sticker price. Than those $9.99 things would cost $9.99 instead of $10.59+.
Niflmir's quote above is a bit incorrect. The last time I calculated 5% tax on $9.99 it came to $10.49, not $10.59. Should the end price be stated to include the GST, then the end price would be $10.49. Take out the GST from $10.49 you get $9.99, which I think is the same price that the retailer wanted in the first place.

Any GST reduction is meant to benefit the wealthy only.

I would think that the lower income earners, not paying income tax, would have little to no effect on increased federal government debt and the higher deficit. If they are not paying income tax, they do not support the debt and deficit that they governments are creating now. Why are the government spending more that they are getting in. That is a very complicated question and there are a lot of arguments on both sides of the debate. I would like some explanation that lowering the GST helps the "High income earners ONLY." Let's hear from Citizen, it is his/her rule.
