For the second time in a week, a B.C. city has rejected a proposed Wal-Mart store. Faced with overwhelming public opposition, Campbell River city council voted Monday night against plans for a large store along the river.

Campbell River's rejection comes on the heels of a decision by Vancouver city council to stop plans for a big-box store on Southeast Marine Drive.

Opponents of the planned store in Campbell River said the estuary of a heritage river, where there has been extensive habitat restoration, was no place for any large commercial development.

Opposition to Wal-Mart's plans for the Island community peaked last week during a three-night, 15-hour public hearing where more than 200 speakers urged council to reject Wal-Mart's rezoning application.

Members of the Campbell River Indian Band Council, who hoped to purchase the land and lease it to Wal-Mart, were among the few who spoke in favour of the project.

There were almost 400 people in the audience on Monday night for the vote, roaring their approval as each of the councillors spoke against the Wal-Mart application.

"I feel that the people have spoken and that you are asking us to protect the river," said Counc. Morgan Ostler. "In the very simplest of terms, it is the right thing to do and therefore, I will not be supporting a change in the zoning."

Wal-Mart spokesperson Tiffany Duzita says Wal-Mart wants to be in the community and will be looking at alternatives.

"I won't deny that I'm not disappointed. I like to win, but you've got to respect what council has to say," she said.

In Edson, Alberta, we're very very happy to be getting a Wal-Mart. It will finally give the price gouging (15%-50% more than in Edmonton), early closing (Store hours say open until 6, but actually closed at 5:30), terrible service (why serve you quickly, where else can you go?) small businesses some needed competition in town.

It will also give high school students a place to work other than the IGA.

Soon I won't have to bend over and take it from behind when I'm forced to buy locally as well!

To be honest though, there will be many small businesses that survive because they sell different or higher quality products than Wal-Mart. The others will be forced to change or disappear. The chamber of commerce (which of course consists of most of the small business owners in Edson) approved the Wal-Mart, and is hiring a consultant to help local business change so they don't get burried by Wal-Mart.

Rev,

The last thing I want at a big box store is customer service. How fun is it to be followed by Future Shop employees trying to 'help'. As long as the lines are short, and returns/exchanges aren't a hassle, that's all that really matters for big box customer service.

I do know what you mean though, I get great service at the local computer store, and I know most everybody there by name. Still, other than work stuff, I don't buy there because of the small town price gouging.

What???? If I buy a pair of Levi's from Wal-Mart they're made by slaves, whereas the Levi's I buy from the local jean store are not???? I don't think so, they're just cheaper.

Damn near everything cheap was made by slave labour somewhere. This is not a Wal-Mart specific problem.

RE: Wal-mart rejected aga

I'm just going to throw this out there and hope it don't hit the fan.

If the slave labourers aren't working at slave labour for slave labour pay what will they be doing? Is $0.50/hr not better then $0.00 per hour? If there was better employment out there for them then they'd be at it right?

How is boycotting Walmart going to get these poor people better paying jobs?

And please understand that I"m trying to understand. Can't figure it out on my own so I turn to the masses........

RE: Wal-mart rejected aga

Walmart is powerful enough to demand better wages and working conditions, Twila. That makes them an example of the problem, not part of the solution.

The other thing that mega outlets like Walmart have is the political power to influence trade deals. Instead of pushing for lower environmental and work standards, they could be pushing for higher standards.
