Quoting
In fact, many plans in the US have a LIFETIME cap for your claims; god forbid you have a major problem when you're in your 20's, because you WON'T have anything left for later.
I thought nothing could surprise me with American HMOs, but you got me on that one. Amazing that it has come to that, allowing big business to have a say in one's health care.

I think many Canadians favour an American-style health system because they read/hear the pro-American hype. Much has been written Stateside to show a negative slant on our system and a positive slant on their system. This is done, I think, to keep Americans from wanting what we have (for there are many who do). It also has the effect of making many Canadians think the same.

What I hear the most from Americans is that socialism = loss of freedom, therefore socialist medicine takes away freedom. Strange reasoning, but there you have it.

The problem with the American system is that its TOO privatized and doesnt have a strong public system to back it up. The Canadian system lacks flexibility and funding. We have the opportunity to create the best system but it can only happen by having a strong public and private system exist side by side. Its essentially about problem solving. The more options you have the more problems can be solved and in a better way and for more people.

Democrite, first I would like to offer some perspective…If you don’t think we have health care, take a look at the U.S.. Canadians have no clue what it’s like to not have health care like the people in the U.S. who make difficult decisions regarding their health every day. Our concerns are valid, don’t get me wrong, I just wish people would quit looking for the white knight to come save us. These are complex issues and I am not hearing anything valid from Harper on the issue of health care. We take much for granted in this country. My point is that there will always be issues. Just because there are concerns that need to be addressed does not mean that we need a full scale change. Do you really think it’s been that bad over the past several years in Canada? I certainly do not. As far as you labeling me a Liberal, well whether I am or not, it’s not difficult to see that we do not have a lot of choice in this country. I’m sure the backers of the former P.C. party are feeling lost right about now. Who in the world are they going to vote for? Harper…yeah right. Maybe out of desperation, but certainly not because they love and have utmost faith in the new fragmented regime.

Democrite is right, their will always be issues. But what caused the current problem, is how Ottawa decided it didnt need to pay its part... Thus the Health Care system has been under financed for the past decade...
