Canada’s trade minister sending signal to China: ‘We’re open to trade’

While Canada moves to protect its economy from U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist agenda, Trump and his commerce secretary have been throwing punches at China, accusing its government of being protective and isolationist.

The relationship creates a potentially difficult trade triangle for Canada to navigate as the government seeks to open its borders to more trade.

But initiating talks with China is the right thing to do, says International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne.

“In a world where people are talking about uncertainty and protectionism, Canada [represents] 0.5 per cent of the world population and we represent 2.2 per cent of global trade, he said in an interview on The West Block.

“So we have to be looking at markets, not only for today but prepare markets for years to come.”

And China is part of that plan. Ottawa has already signalled its intention to explore enhanced trade with China.

“I think sitting down with China is the right thing to do. We’re going to look at whether that’s in the Canadian interest, and if it is we’ll continue,” Champagne said.

You cannot find a more potentially catastrophic agenda to destroy the Canadian economy, than doubling down on Free Trade, in world that has finally realized the whole thing is a con, and shell game, that enriches traders and financiers at the cost of workers and farmers.

I don't believe there is any agreement the Chinese have ever upheld. There is no trade pact they have not violated. They lie, cheat and steal constantly, and then simply blithely deny it. Nothing better illustrates the Chinese mentality than the south china sea dispute. They 'built' some little islands, then declared they own everything within 200 kilometers of them. They promised not to put arms on them, and then did so. And when the case went to court and their claim was ruled nonsense, they ignored the ruling. The Chinese believe that if you can get away with screwing someone, there is absolutely no earthly reason why you shouldn't do so. If that means breaking every trade deal in the book, from stealing the intellectual property from other countries, or illegally subsidizing exports to other countries in order to ruin those other countries' industries, you do it, and then simply shrug and deny doing it later. I am no fan of Trump but he is absolutely right in how the Chinese have been screwing every other country on trade for the past decade or more.

I agree that China is not trustworthy.

Norinco (China North Industries Corporation) headquartered in Beijing, is a very large company, who among other things, make firearms. They make exact copies of patented US handguns and rifles. So exact that the parts are interchangeable. Whether you are pro or anti gun has nothing to do with the fact that they stole the plans and make 45 Government handguns, and a lot of US military equipment.

Norinco products are banned from sale in the US for this reason. They are not banned for sale in Canada however.

They claim that they never signed any agreements to recognize copyrights, patents or trademarks, so they will do what they please. If they are making firearms, you can bet they are making other things as well. Canadians are accepting of this, I guess.

Sad indeed. Harper's FIPA was bad, it bound us for 31 fuc$#ng years to China. The deal was much much better for China than Canada and we can be sued all over the place. Plus the worst is that JT has continued the fuc#up deals. It's scary to think that we've opened our national security to a communist country and that our Leaders think that China will not take advantage of the gift!! I certainly hope that we soon get a Leader that can take care of Canada's interest and knows the difference between a good deal and exploitation. It's time to put the brakes with China, not keep selling.
