SaskPower seeks rate hike to deal with aging infrastructure
SaskPower is asking for a rate hike, which will amount to an extra 10% or an extra 12-dollars a month for your power bill – all so SaskPower can deal with aging infrastructure and to keep up with growing demand.
SaskPower spokesman Jonathan Tremblay says there is a lot of work planned for the Saskatoon and Regina includes replacing transformers in the residential neighbourhoods with many having been installed in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
He says they aren’t the safest for SaskPower workers to repair and fail a lot more than new equipment would.
Tremblay says they are digging up underground lines in Saskatoon and Regina, which have also been in service for the last 60 years or so.
They are going to reinforce the lines to give them another 20 to 40 years of life.
SaskPower says aging infrastructure causes about 34% of unplanned outages in Saskatchewan.
With about 40 thousand followers on Twitter, SaskPower plans to use that to spread the word about planned power outages.
For the bigger projects, they will seek out advertising in main stream media to get the information to residents.
