Ontario premier meets with Black Lives Matter protesters at the legislature

TORONTO – Premier Kathleen Wynne told a crowd of Black Lives Matter protesters who marched to the Ontario legislature today that she agrees racism still exists and that it’s a very important issue to her.

The activists have been camping out in front of Toronto police headquarters for two weeks, with demands that include an overhaul of Ontario’s police watchdog and the release of the name of an officer who fatally shot a man last summer.

The Special Investigations Unit recently found that the officer who shot the hammer-wielding Andrew Loku did not exceed the range of justifiable force.

The protesters marched to the legislature today, chanting, “black lives, they matter here” and calling for the premier to come out and meet with them.

Wynne and her security detail waded into the crowd of about 100 people and spoke with two of the organizers, telling them that she wants to arrange a formal meeting.

Kori Ali Muhammad, 39, was arrested shortly after the morning rampage that left three white men dead, police said. Muhammad, who is black, fired 16 rounds in less than two minutes at four places within a block, shooting men who appeared to be going about their day, authorities say.

During his arrest, Muhammad shouted “Allahu Akbar,” but Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the shootings had “nothing to do with terrorism in spite of the statement he made.”

“This is solely based on race,” Dyer told reporters."

A hammer is a potentially lethal weapon. When people are holding lethal weapons and refuse to put them down and come close to an officer all police officers in North America are trained to shoot them. None are trained in disarming techniques, and none have more than cursory training in physical combat. This had little or nothing to do with racism, and much to do with improper police training.

Every police officer in Japan is expected to get their black belt in Judo. A first class constable in Canada is now paid a base salary approaching $100,000 a year. We can and should expect and demand much more of them.
