Ontario economy posts modest third-quarter growth boosted by lag in loonie

A surge in exports fuelled by the lagging loonie helped Ontario notch modest growth of 0.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2015 — double the pace of the previous three months, Ministry of Finance figures show.

The three per cent growth in exports from July to September was the biggest since 2013 thanks to a sliding dollar that continues to make Canadian goods cheaper on world markets.

“In an increasingly competitive and challenging global market, Ontario’s economy continues to grow well,” Finance Minister Charles Sousa said in a statement Friday.

"Private-sector economists are forecasting that Ontario’s growth will continue to outpace the nation over the next two years,” added Sousa.

No, no. We post economic growth numbers because of massive infusions of money from Alberta. There is no other possible explanation.

Mexico’s economic recovery continued to gather steam during the third quarter, as a sharp pick up in domestic consumption helped offset the drag from the energy sector.

Gross domestic product grew 0.8 per cent in the third quarter from the prior prior period, the country’s National Statistics Institute said on Friday.

That’s the quickest pace since the third quarter of 2013 and is ahead of the 0.6 per cent expected by economists.

It is also a step up from the revised 0.6 per cent and 0.5 per cent quarter-on-quarter expansion recorded during the first two quarters of the year

Despite its proximity to the US, Latin America’s number two economy has been struggling to quicken growth with the slump in oil prices weighing on the energy sector.

The country’s central bank has cut its growth guidance for 2015 four times already. It now expects gross domestic product to grow between 1.7-2.5 per cent this year, down from previous forecast of 2-3 per cent.

Because oil is only 3% of our GDP. We never lost oil jobs. We lost construction jobs.

Somebody has been lying to you.

Saskatchewan was just about the poorest province for a long time. It goes to show that you should never abandon hope.

The Ontario government debt is the amount of money the Government of Ontario borrowed from the general public, institutional investors and from public-sector bodies. As of September 30, 2013 the Ontario government's total debt stood at CDN$288.10 billion.

One word; U-G-L-Y

.... What was that you were saying about Sask being poor once?

I wonder why you can't find a Canadian flour mill outside of ON?

Is that where the grain is? No.

Anyone?

I didn't know that they were still milling in Ontario.

Perhaps, if is easier to move wheat rather than flour to the markets where all of the people are?

Why don't you distill petroleum in Sask and truck gasolene east?

Why? Because you said something really really stupid and got pinched?

See ya!

So, yes you probably have refineries all over Saskatchewan. They are almost all closed in the East so they must have all gone to you guys.

Um, how much gasolene, naptha, diesel, JP, stove oil, kerosene, lube oil, bunker, from Western Canada do we use in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland/Labrador ... you know, out on the fringes where we delude ourselves into thinking that most of us live here?
