A former finance director of the Sipekne’katik band appeared in Halifax provincial court Thursday for a preliminary inquiry on seven criminal charges.
Jeffrey Cecil Hayes, 60, of Halifax is charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, breach of trust and four counts of possession of property obtained by crime.
The offences were allegedly committed between 2009 and 2012, when Hayes worked for the band at the Indian Brook reserve near Shubenacadie.
A forensic audit conducted for the band identified $790,780 in questionable payments made to Hayes and two companies — MRJJ Management, of which Hayes is a shareholder, and Amcrest Management Inc., which is owned by Hayes.
The report also found $1,086,178 in problematic payments to band councillor Mike Sack and several companies he is involved with.
