Stephen Harper’s new ad features Chevy Camaro while production leaves Canada

Stephen Harper’s new ad features Chevy Camaro creation. One problem: production is leaving Canada

A new federal Conservative Party ad touting Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s “proven leadership” features an image of Chevy Camaro production, which is shifting this fall from Oshawa to Lansing, Mich., a move that will wipe out 1,000 jobs.

“That’s a painful choice of backdrop for another Conservative video,” said Jim Stanford, senior economist at Unifor, which represents hourly workers at the Detroit Three’s Canadian plants.

The YouTube video, posted Monday, is titled Proven Leadership. It features a voice-over by Harper against a montage of images depicting the government’s response to such events as the 2008-09 financial crisis, the near collapse of General Motors and Chrysler and terrorism.

The video is part of a series of Conservative Party advertisements running ahead of the October federal election.

Cory Hann, a spokesman for the party, said “all of our ads released today speak for themselves. They show what Canadians already know — that being prime minister is not an entry-level job and requires proven leadership to make hard decisions, like how best to keep Canada safe from the threats of jihadi terrorism. They also show (Liberal Party Leader) Justin Trudeau’s inexperience …”

Hann also referred to tweets posted by GM Canada, saying that “the V8 engine for the next-generation Camaro will be built in Canada, and GM has invested $780 million in Oshawa and St Catharines over the past three years and looks to invest more.”

General Motors announced its intention to shift production of the Camaro muscle car to Michigan two years ago. On April 30, it confirmed that the last Camaro would roll off the Oshawa assembly line Nov. 20. The carmaker said no decisions about future product for Oshawa would be made until the next round of contract talks, which are set to begin in the summer of 2016.

Unifor has pressed both Ottawa and Queen’s Park to establish a national auto strategy designed to attract automotive investment. Canada has been overlooked by automakers, who are increasingly building new plants in Mexico and the southern U.S. states.

The union also was upset over the federal and provincial governments’ decision to sell remaining shares in General Motors, which were acquired as part of the multibillion-dollar bailout.

“The 2009 effort to save GM was important,” said Stanford. “The problem was they cut short their efforts to keep that production here. They allocated billions to help GM survive, but then they put the whole issue on the back burner, and part of that result has GM moving production out of Canada. And we don’t know what comes next.”

The loss of Camaro will leave the Oshawa plant with about 2,600 hourly employees. GM said it would continue to produce five other vehicles in Oshawa, including the Chevrolet Impala, Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Equinox and Chevrolet Impala Limited.

The carmaker is offering buyouts in a bid to mitigate the number of layoffs.

(Edit) GM wanted Canada and ONTARIO to remain as major shareholders so they did it out of spite?

What we saw with GM production is that the government did well by propping them up during the recession because of the stimulus.

It's not surprising then, that when they sold shares in the company it provided some much needed revenue, but the caveat is that they would need to cut back on certain projects (like the Camaro) in order to remain competitive.

This is all normal when you consider the existing market conditions for that industry, but it was a huge gaffe for the Tories in this ad.

Why does the article you posted included ON Gov selling off remaining stock? You sure they aren't mad at Dyke Muffy?

It's just part of the market.

None of the other provinces have been developed to pick up the slack (either by their own account or by Harper's) so GM had nowhere else to go but south of the border. If the federal government had decided to put more resources in developing that industry elsewhere, this could have been avoided.

Why are they moving?

Selling GM.

Another Province under the direction of Harper should have bought and moved the Oshawa plant?

Why didn't Dyke Muffy buy the Fed stocks?

One could argue the GM jobs are due to the leadership of the Province of Ontario. I am sure the sky high electricity rates and cost of business here had nothing to do with GM decisions.

And Harper did nothing to persuade GM to keep production in Canada (even if it was another province).

That makes his advertising about taking credit for the 'success' of that line especially egregious.

Why another Province away from the supply chain? That's not sustainable.

Until next week, when you praise Sasquatchewon manufacturing.

Is it our job in SK to bail out GM to make jobs in ON? Is that why Dyke Muffy sold off GM shares the same time the Feds did? Why would the 2000 ready to retire of the 3100 losing their jobs move? Why aren't you bitching at Dyke Muffy? What has he/she done?

I think both ads are super good...first one makes him look human and vulnerable

the second..."not saying no forever, he's just not ready" excellent attack without the blood

well done!!

I don't think so...no arrogance at all

gentle attack ad too
