The main rival of one of Justin Trudeau’s star candidates has been blocked from seeking the Liberal nomination in an Ottawa-area riding over a dispute with the party involving his unpaid leadership campaign debts.

Lawyer David Bertschi, who ran and lost for the Liberals in Ottawa-Orléans in the 2011 election, is fighting for the nomination against Lt.-Gen. (ret’d) Andrew Leslie, the former commander of the Canadian Army and a member of Trudeau’s advisory panel on foreign affairs.

The party’s “Green Light” committee cleared Bertschi to challenge for the nomination in May, despite concerns he had breached the debt limit set by the party during his long-shot bid to win the leadership in 2013.

Popcorn, get your popcorn. Notice of libel served to the Liberal Party of Canada over the Orleans nomination kerfuffle.

Bertschi sends Liberals libel notice over Orléans nomination fight

Lawyer David Bertschi has taken the first step to launching defamation action against Liberal Party officials after approval for him to seek the nomination in the riding of Ottawa-Orléans was revoked.

Bertschi has been at the centre of an increasingly acrimonious dispute with the Liberals that boiled over Saturday when retired general Andrew Leslie was acclaimed as the party’s candidate in the riding in the next election.

The Liberals wrote to Bertschi in November to inform him that his prior “green light” to seek the nomination in Orléans had been rescinded over unpaid debts from his unsuccessful 2013 leadership bid and his alleged failure to tell a candidate screening committee about a past lawsuit.

Bertschi, who ran and lost in the riding in 2011, assailed the decision as “backroom, strong-arm politics” and anti-democratic.

Now he has sent a libel notice to the Liberals signalling his intent to sue for defamation over the nomination imbroglio.

Bertschi did not respond to requests for comment Monday but in an interview with CBC Radio referred to the legal action.

Ahhh General Leslie. I remember him well.

Please, kind sir, expand on your experience of the good General.

From what I have heard, he is the kind of guy public stocks were invented for........
