Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong is accusing Waterfront Toronto of throwing more money down the toilet — this time literally.
Minnan-Wong questions why the taxpayer-funded organization dedicated to building the city’s waterfront flushed away $600,000 — including $175,000 just on design work — for washrooms at the Cherry Beach Sports Fields in the Port Lands.
Waterfront Toronto and Councillor Paula Fletcher defended the cost by highlighting the unique problems for building a bathroom at the site, including the lack of a sewer line and the fact the entire sports fields complex sits on remediated land.
“The costs are exceedingly high, they’re exorbitant,” Minnan-Wong told the Toronto Sun Wednesday. “These are bathrooms, they’re not national monuments.”

Since 2011, the Ford Administration has repeatedly expressed serious concerns over an apparent lack of accountability at Waterfront Toronto. Newest reports suggest that Waterfront Toronto wasted $600,000 of hard earned taxpayers’ money on a single public washroom facility, including over $175,000 on design work alone. That is roughly the cost of an average home in Toronto. This is simply the latest example in a pattern of blatant disregard for taxpayers’ money at Waterfront Toronto. We recently learned that $1,000,000 was squandered on 2 rocks and 36 umbrellas at Sugar Beach. This is not how taxpayers want their hard earned money spent.
Although Waterfront Toronto does not report directly to the Mayor, or to Toronto City Council, all government bodies are responsible to the taxpayer. Since 2001, we haven’t seen value for money at Waterfront Toronto. If taxpayers cannot trust the leadership of Waterfront Toronto to build a washroom, how can we trust them with billions of dollars to revitalize one of Toronto’s most important assets?
