A former worker at Wal-Mart is claiming the retail giant is running a sophisticated surveillance operation that targets employees, journalists, stockholders and critics. The worker, Bruce Gabbard, says the retail giant spied on employees, journalists, stockholders and critics of the company. We speak with the Wall Street Journal reporter who broke the story.

It looks like the Harper government though the Privy Council Office is taking the same approach with MPs and doing it at taxpayer expense. There seems to be few limits that Harper will go to achieve the kind of control needed to rule Canada through intimidation and manipulation instead of good democratic governance.

OTTAWA — Opposition parties accused Stephen Harper’s government of spying on its own MPs and being poor money managers Thursday after The Huffington Post Canada revealed Conservatives had spent $23 million on media monitoring in two years — including millions to track their own backbench MPs.

“Instead of helping young people and middle class families, the Conservatives are wasting more than $3,000 a day of taxpayers’ money to spy on their own MPs,” Liberal House leader Dominic LeBlanc said in the House of Commons.
