OTTAWA - Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is set to announce Monday that the feds are moving to strip about 3,000 people of their Canadian citizenships for fraudulent applications.
Federal officials have identified 11,000 questionable applications for citizenship or permanent resident status. The feds have also flagged about 5,000 fake permanent residents who actually live outside the country.
Those people are also at risk of losing that status to prevent them from later obtaining citizenship.
Thousands of people are believed to have used crooked immigration consultants to establish a fake presence in Canada in order to obtain permanent resident status - the final step before applying for citizenship.
Often the fraud cases involve people from the Middle East looking to establish an escape route should they feel the need to flee their own country.
The feds have also identified suspect cases they'll set apart for tougher scrutiny.
