John Baird's full statement:

“Canada has closed its embassy in Iran, effective immediately, and declared personae non gratae all remaining Iranian diplomats in Canada.
“Canada’s position on the regime in Iran is well known. Canada views the Government of Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today.
“The Iranian regime is providing increasing military assistance to the Assad regime; it refuses to comply with UN resolutions pertaining to its nuclear program; it routinely threatens the existence of Israel and engages in racist anti-Semitic rhetoric and incitement to genocide; it is among the world’s worst violators of human rights; and it shelters and materially supports terrorist groups, requiring the Government of Canada to formally list Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism under the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act.
“Moreover, the Iranian regime has shown blatant disregard for the Vienna Convention and its guarantee of protection for diplomatic personnel. Under the circumstances, Canada can no longer maintain a diplomatic presence in Iran. Our diplomats serve Canada as civilians, and their safety is our number one priority.
“Diplomatic relations between Canada and Iran have been suspended. All Canadian diplomatic staff have left Iran, and Iranian diplomats in Ottawa have been instructed to leave within five days.
“Canadians in Iran seeking routine consular and passport services should contact the Embassy of Canada in Ankara, Turkey, or any other Canadian mission. Those who require urgent assistance should contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa, by calling collect at 613-996-8885 or by sending an email to sos@international.gc.ca.
“Canada has updated its Travel Reports and Warnings to advise Canadians to avoid all travel to Iran. Canadians who have Iranian nationality are warned in particular that the Iranian regime does not recognize the principle of dual nationality. By doing so, Iran makes it virtually impossible for Government of Canada officials to provide consular assistance to Iranian-Canadians in difficulty.”

Diplomatic ones.......:)

I imagine the withdrawal (I know) had a LOT to do with this:

Iran embassy warned by Ottawa over alleged recruitment of expats in Canada | News | National Post

Iranian embassy in Ottawa

as well as the stated reasons in the OP below.

My little heart leaps with joy!!!

Why I vote Conservative.....

With IRAN????

Wake up and smell the coffee.
From what we see hear on the news, the US and Israel apparently plan to possibly attack Iran, and we all know what will happen if it is done,Canada and other "Allies" will be told to do their part in it.

The current gov't of the United States will not join an Israeli attack on Iran.

If Israel attacks Iran, it will be a case of self-preservation.

Israel is our ally, Iran our enemy. While we will NOT be involved in any attack on Iran, we would probably be involved in subsequent efforts to keep the Gulf of Hormuz open to shipping.

Wow this was an interesting article.

Yeah...it is, isn't it????

For continental security......

There are ****loads of scientists and strategists they'd love to have come back to Iran. The people of Iran are decent and well educated but the regime they have to live under is ****ed and has it's role to play.

A little FYI for you. This big ol' mess between Iran/Israel nukes/no nukes is just a slice of the overall picture. There is more than meets the eye.

I'm not going to fall for another Iraq and I'm sure as **** not defending Iran This is more about energy than anything else. Think I'm wrong? What if I said "gasoline is going to drop in price very soon because of this kerfuffle"? India just reaffirmed long term energy contracts with Iran. In response you are going to see the price of oil drop and US imports drop at the same time within the next month before the election.

India is preparing for the fallout....

P.S.....there is an opportunity to make a quick 10% investing in silver.

Actually Canada and Israel are not formally allies. The Harper government was exploring a mutual defense agreement with Israel, but nothing came of the talks. But if anyone has evidence to the contrary, please correct me.

That said, I have no doubts that if Israel bombed Iran, the US and Canada would become involved in the inevitable quagmire...

How absurd. Every country uses their embassy to try to exert influence over its ex-pats, and with the current government.
This is a basic combination of the current government's Islamaphobia, and the next stage of pandering to the Jewish community.

Recruiting ex-pats to carry out specific actions to gain influence over a gov't and a people is of some concern, especially when the protagonist is the largest supporter of Islamist terror in the world.

Ask this woman, who is in hiding from Islamist terrorists that murdered her co-worker, who was once a follower of the Muslim Brotherhood, who underwent FGM........ask her about Islamophobia.

Here she makes a fool of Avi Lewis.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali about Islamophobia - YouTube

WHAT do the Jews have to do with it??? If you did a minimum of research, you would discover there are almost twice as many Muslims as Jews in Canada........so why would the gov't "pander" to them??

Conclusion??

You are an idiot.

Go away.

Perhaps you're not aware of this, but Israel (the Jewish state), does not encourage countries to have good relations with Iran, because they see Iran as a threat. Their lobby groups and embassy influence ex-pat Israelis and other Jews to minimize Iran's influence.

"If you did a minimum of research, you would discover there are almost twice as many Muslims as Jews in Canada........so why would the gov't "pander" to them??"

So you believe that the Muslim community in Canada has more political influence in Canada than the Jewish community?

"SNIFF SNIFF" smells like WW3 is coming.

Ha. If the US and others chose to attack Iran the government would be taken out within a few weeks. I imagine it'd be very similar to Iraq. While it would not be pleasant for the Iranian civilians or the troops sent over there it would be nowhere near as bad as a single day of world war one or two.

As for cutting off diplomatic relations - no big deal. Its not like they were listening to anything anyway.

Didn't Russia gave an ultimatum/threat that the sh*t would hit the fan,if the west attack Iran?
