She’s been outspoken against Canada’s role in asbestos mining and export for the past 19 years, but a call from Blackburn News this morning left Margaret Buist almost speechless. The widow of asbestosis victim Harry Buist was thrilled to hear that if elected next week, the Parti Quebecois will cancel 58 million dollars in provincial loans to investors to re-open the Jeffrey asbestos mine.

The PQ also says if elected, it would spend the 58 million dollars to support economic diversification in the asbestos mining regions. Canada has faced world-wide criticism for mining and exporting asbestos after the World Health Organization declared it a carcinogen.
