Mayor Rob Ford vowed Tuesday to “get serious” about creating jobs by attracting more business to Toronto, in part by driving down the commercial property tax rate. Speaking to a sold-out crowd of 300 business people, Mr. Ford set a target of creating 50,000 jobs over the next five years to help bring Toronto’s 9.5% unemployment rate in line with the 7.5% national average.

He wants to harness the momentum of the building boom sweeping Toronto, with 189 construction cranes dotting the skyline, but push for office tower construction. And he wants to make the city more competitive with its neighbours.

“Our commercial property taxes in Toronto are too high,” Mr. Ford told a $79-a-plate Economic Club of Canada luncheon at the downtown Marriott. “One business owner told me he would pay $600,000 per year less if he moved his 100-person office to Mississauga. Toronto is losing out like this every month.”
