Calgrians get noisy at Quebec-style casserole rally
March focussed on Bill 78

More than 150 Calgarians banged pots and pans downtown Wednesday night in support of Quebec students.

The group walked from Eighth Avenue and First Street S.W. to city hall and then back, making noise for over an hour.

The rally was inspired by Quebec's student movement's "casserole" rallies.

Casserole rallies — or cacerolazos — originated in Latin American countries as a form of popular protest where people bang pots and pans.

Participant Kelly Dowdell said she was at the rally not only to support Quebec students' fight against rising tuition, but to show her discontent with Bill 78, the legislation that could limit the right to protest.

Dowdell said she was impressed with how many people showed up.

“We’re not known for showing a lot of solidarity with Quebec, and I think the turnout shows that this is a universal issue that young people are facing around the world.”

A woman I know said last night that "Quebecers are fighting for all our rights. It is a shame that the rest of Canadians are either too lazy or apathetic to fight for theirs". And she is from Calgary originally. This bit of news will probably give her hope.

The rest of the country is starting to wake up (finally).

What rights? The right to destroy private property? Or the right to be supported by taxpayers?

SO you have proved that there are freeloaders in Alberta as well. No surprise there.
The woman I mentioned above is a millionaire and just finished building a million dollar home in Salmon Arm that she designed. I don't think you could call her a free loader. But then you seem to have a very narrow view of what other people are.

Perhaps But I have met rich socialists before. Most of them inherited their money and are somehow ashamed of it. Never could figure that one out.

Little dogs in their own backyard yapping, others will often sympathy bark but will not share their food.
The rest of Canadians stepped up when there was actually something to fight for, paybec had to be conscripted.
