In a proaggressive society water-boarding would have been done on the spot, and then on her husband should she have even called him after that.
The alternative I like is to have a dog-sled team on standby and the complainers (what happened to the others??) would be 'forced' to go the whole journey in that mode. (should the bears not eat them)
