Scarborough MPP Brad Duguid believes underground is the way to go for Toronto's transit expansion, but he's willing to leave the final decision up to city council.

In fact all six Scarborough MPPSs - including former city councillor Duguid - have expressed their preference for an underground option both on the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT and the extension on Sheppard Avenue.

"We've always been strong advocates for the Sheppard subway extension and we encourage council to take that into consideration," he said in an interview Tuesday, March 13.

In the bush near Sudbury
What's so wrong about it? Toronto (Scarberia included) is a land cancer. It's not going to stop sprawling over good farmland. May as well have the transit to service it.

Listen to people, not Sheppard panel, Ford says

TORONTO - “Hogwash” is how Mayor Rob Ford describes the Sheppard Ave. transit advisory panel’s work.

A tough-talking Ford made the comments just before he climbed aboard the 85 Sheppard East bus at Don Mills Station - the current end of the Sheppard subway line that he still hopes to extend.

“We know what the expert panel is going to say, it is just a bunch of hogwash,” Ford said Thursday. “I listen to the people out here, not a handpicked, biased panel.”

I thought Mayor Ford is a Conservative because they use handpicked, biased panels on an ongoing bases

Nah...it's simply because he doesn't like black people. :p

At any rate, the oil sands-hating tree huggers at pembina are more than 'biased'. ;-)

Ford is such a chump. The more he protests this, the worse he will look when his plan is finally shot down for good.

Expert transit panel recommends LRT on Sheppard, plan to build public support

Reading over this report, the council has really stepped it up and done their homework..

Conclusions

If Council adopts the Panel's recommendation to implement the LRT-only option for Sheppard East, there will not be any impact on the City's capital budget as the capital cost of the project will be funded by Metrolinx and the Federal government.

If Council chooses either the subway or hybrid option, additional capital funding will be required from the City. If a conventional approach is implemented to generate the necessary City funding, the City's capital contribution will be funded through the issuance of debenture debt and property tax increases will be necessary to repay the debentures.

The issuance of the necessary debentures will increase the City's net debt in 2021 by $1.6 - $2.5 billion under the Subway Option and $0.4 - $0.7 billion under the Hybrid Option.

It is estimated that an annual tax increase of 0.6% to 0.9% would be necessary over a seven-year period to generate the revenues necessary to repay the debentures under the Subway Option and an annual tax increase of 0.2% to 0.3% would be required to repay the debentures under the Hybrid option.
