Feds taken to court over First Nations child welfare

OTTAWA — The federal government is being taken to court today over funding for child welfare on First Nations. It's a case that could have much wider implications.

Child welfare advocates, the Assembly of First Nations and the Canadian Human Rights Commission are behind the court case.

They accuse the federal government of systematic -- and discriminatory -- underfunding for child welfare.

They say children on First Nations receive significantly less funding than off-reserve kids in terms child and family services.

They want affirmation that federal services provided to First Nations are directly comparable to services provided by provincial governments to all other Canadians.

David Langtry of the human rights commission says a win for First Nations would mean they could ask the courts to force Ottawa to match provincial funding in other areas like health and education.

The court is not expected to rule for some time after hearing arguments this week.

I surprised the case doesn't say anything about the 10s of thousands of kids who have been taken from their homes and either put into the foster care program or adopted out to white families.

I watched the video, another tedious jurisdictional dispute. Adults get to continue to play their games, while kids suffer. The beat goes on.

Aboriginal kids make up a large portion of the kids in custody, much more than their percentage of the population. More govt money will likely solve this problem like it will solve the aborginal housing problem. Meaning it won't.

Makes you think that psychopaths don't just work for corporations, but in govt and their intent is to screw things up as much as possible for the most vulnerable people. Being born an aboriginal child means you are placed squarely behind the eight ball in life. At least our racial ghettos are far away from cities so we don't have to live near them or accidentally move into one. Didn't Elvis sing a song about this?

If race doesn't exist, then why is there an Indian Act to separate once race from another?
