Tories, NDP demand government release pay, other data on ORNGE air ambulance

TORONTO - Ontario's opposition parties demanded answers Friday about high salaries at the province's air ambulance system and accused the Liberal government of stonewalling their attempts to get the information.

After years of opposition demands for more information and media attempts to find out salaries at the air ambulance service, the Toronto Star reported Friday that ORNGE air ambulance chief executive Chris Mazza is paid $1.4 million a year.

Mazza went on an indefinite medical leave Thursday, just hours before his salary _ the highest for anyone paid by Ontario taxpayers _ was made public.

"We’ve got a guy now on medical leave from a salary of $1.4 million per year, and we’ve got issues with how ORNGE has been operated as an ambulance service," said Progressive Conservative Peter Shurman.

"The McGuinty government has been aware of this for a couple of years, so we’re not talking about something new."
The Tories have been demanding answers about salaries and operations at ORNGE for years, said Shurman, only to have the government rebuff their inquiries.

The Libs were stonewalling this?

Weren't they the ones demanding the salary info. from ORNGE?

“I strongly encourage ORNGE to work collaboratively with the Auditor General’s office and my ministry, being as forthcoming as possible with any and all information requested of ORNGE,” Health Minister Deb Matthews wrote in a letter delivered to the air service Monday. In her letter, Matthews said she was “pleased to see that ORNGE has been delivering on its performance targets to deliver high-quality patient care.” But she said the air service needs to be transparent and accountable to taxpayers.

As far as I understand, The Star was actually the one that broke the news on the president's salary after they kept hammering ORNGE for some juice.

ORNGE air ambulance boss Dr. Chris Mazza was paid $1.4 million a year, making him the highest publicly paid official in Ontario.

The Star is revealing this after two weeks of stonewalling by the air ambulance service.
