Do we need it in Canada? What would the implications of being the first to base our law on Christian ideals mean for Canada?
Would you support it?

What exactly would "Christian Law" be in the first place? I can't imagine the various denominations coming to any sort of agreement as to what the laws should be.

I definitely would not support it or any religious based law for that matter.

As one already mentioned in the other thread about Ontario, there should be no inclusion or special treatment for any religion and the separation of church and state should remain true.

If our laws were originally based on a Christian point of view, then our laws need to be re-addressed accordingly and adjusted to remove any special treatment and allow laws to be fair and just for anybody seeking justice, regardless of their religious or lack of religious affiliation.

Otherwise, as we're already seeing, many other religions will start wanting special treatment or excuse from law because of their religious beliefs.

If you want to live your life as your religious teachings or rules dictate, fine..... do so..... address your religious issues and breaking of laws within your church, mosque or whatever and address those issues with your priest, minister, etc...... but none of those rules/laws in your religions should compromise or contradict any existing laws in our country and they should not compromise or contradict the rights given to every citizen under the charter of rights.

No court in this country should recognize any religious dogma beliefs or punishments..... otherwise there'd be so many laws and restrictions based on every religion out there, that you wouldn't even be able to wipe your arse without saying several prayers for all the various gods and prophets out there for every religion....... or end up facing a stoning, followed by being burned at the stake.

Sorry, but we don't need another Medici family running the show. They did their job during the renaissance, but it's time to stop using a lie to move things forward.

We have Jewish Mosaic Law right now blended with Masonic idealisms.

Most western countries probably do, you cannot really say we are governed by 'religious law' though. Our legal systems have borrowed from the French, the English, Native culture etc etc.

DurkaDurka;

What exactly would "Christian Law" be in the first place?

The Law that was told by Jesus Christ .
Jesus told his disciples that He will give them 'another' Law and that there is no Law more important than this one;
"Love God with all your heart and all your soul and love your neighbor as you love your self ; there is no other law more important than this and in this Law falls all the laws and Prophets Mr.DurkaDurka

:-?

Sorry to say, but the above was a general practice by many humans in many different cultures long before Jesus supposedly came along and claimed it as his own..... this isn't some holy law.... this is common sense..... minus the Love God thing.

In simple terms, do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.

The Golden Rule
The Golden Rule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Golden Rule, as a concept, has a history that long predates the term "Golden Rule" (or "Golden law," as it was called from the 1670s). The ethic of reciprocity was present in certain forms in the philosophies of ancient Babylon, Egypt, Persia, India, Greece, Judea, and China. The "Golden Rule" however usually refers to the saying of Jesus of Nazareth: "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." (Matthew 7:12, see also Luke 6:31) The common English phrasing is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". A similar form appeared in a Catholic catechism around 1567 (certainly in the reprint of 1583)."

^ Kind of like how Gods in the Clouds/Sky, bad guys under ground, angels and Halos, etc. were adopted from Roman Mythology..... which was derived from Greek mythology...... like how the story of Jesus was adopted from Ra, the Egyptian Sun God.

Religion should not dictate law, but, at the same time, law should not be discounted simply because it is part of a religion.

Praxius, in reference to your comments about the Golden Rule... there's a reason it's at the root of pretty much every religion and every set of laws, and that's because, I firmly believe, it is the root motivator of human evolution. It's why we are so outraged when a country or an individual seem to toss it aside.... because it's what built us, and what will keep us alive in future generations.

The golden rule doesn't apply too well to the issue of class taxation though. Especially when the rich believe they should be taxed the same as the poor.

I agree.... it is one of the core roots of why we still exist on this planet and evolved to where we are today...... but when it comes to any religion attempting to claim the Golden Rule or similar as their own creation, thus taking full credit for our progress as a species, then I start to grow a few issues.

Christ simply said we should live by it, not that no one had ever done it before. Others may infer that no one was nice to anyone before Christ came along, but, that doesn't make them correct.

Christ taught compassion, love, fellowship... he didn't teach ownership or claim copyright on his ideas. Dogma did that later. :)

Just read this funny article on what America would be like if they actually followed Jesus' ideals. Keep in mind this is the same country that is currently 76% indoctrinated by the Christian faith...

With polls showing that voters rank the economy as a top issue, why are the faith lives of candidates up for debate?
The faith lives of candidates are up for debate because our faith is a defining factor of our personhood. It is not the only factor, but it is one. It is a part of the complex mix of who we are and the values that we hold. However, in the heat and muck of a political campaign the faith positions of candidates can hardly be presented in full. It is easy to distort a candidate's beliefs for political gain. If Jesus were running during this election cycle, he would be subject to attack ads.
Imagine the possibilities. Imagine that the various towns named in biblical texts were in somewhere USA.

On foreign policy:

A shot of the World Trade Center towers falling.

Voiceover: 9/11. The nation suffers the worst attack on its soil in history. But Jesus says that we ought to love the people who did this. He says: "do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who misuse and persecute you." (Matthew 5:44) Love al Qaeda? Do good to the people who attacked us? This is no plan to keep us safe. Jesus. Soft on defense. Wrong for America.

On Jesus' patriotism:

Scene: Jesus is speaking to a large audience. He says: "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the Day of Judgment than for you." (Matthew 11: 21-22) Voice: Why does Jesus hate America? Do we really want someone who hates his country so much making laws for us? Real America, tell Jesus no on Election Day.

On socialism:

Scene: A scene from the movie Dr. Zhivago when he comes home from the war to find strangers living in his house. The woman says there was room for many families here. Freeze frame.

Voice: Karl Marx says that the government ought to take from each according to his abilities, and give to each according to his needs. This is socialism. This is communism. Jesus agrees with Marx. He says to be saved, you have to give your hard-earned possessions away. He said: "Go and sell whatever you have and give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven."(Mark 10: 21) Jesus. Socialism. Dangerous for America.

I'd like to see Christ's kharma run over the church's dogma. Fair is fair if their dogma is off it's leash.

If people acted like and did the things Christ said to do our jails and loonie bins would be overflowing.

Usually they wish to be taxed, percentage wise, a whole lot less.

Trickle down theory, creates jobs jobs jobs doncha know.

""Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.""

Living by that law, we wouldn't need a whole bunch of others.

English Common Law, under which we are pretty much governed is based a whole bunch on stuff gleaned from Judeo/Christian teachings.

Although Canada subscribes to the separation of church and state, they don't subscribe hard enough.
