Hey all,

I am a 16 year old Dutch girl, and next year I'm going to my exam year. And in September I gotta finish an exam report, and the subject of my report is "The differences between the Dutch and Canadian culture" . And this report is not only about copying statics from the internet, I gotta do the research all by myself to compare it to the statics on the net. So, my question is: would you like to answer my list of questions so I can go on with my report? Because at the moment I can't go on, cause I don't have enough people interviewed yet and I need people from a lot of different ages. I hope you will help me or make time to answer the questions, I will really appreciate it! :canada:

Greetings, theartoflosing.

These are the questions:

Name: Darryl
Age: 41

1. What is your nationality? Canadian! (of German decent)
2. What is your religion? Agnostic (but brought up Lutheran)
3. Did you grow up in a religious family? If yes, did it add something to your life?
Yes. I don't know that the religion added a lot per se, but my parents were very firm on teaching me about personal responsibility and accountability.
4. Do you have some special family traditions? If yes, what are they for? Nothing that I consider uniquely ours.
5. What is, in your opinion, typical Canadian? Unobtrusive. Understated. Attempts to be honest.
6. What is, in your opinion, characteristic about the Canadian culture? Canadian culture is dominated by its need to find distinctions from American culture, often trying to point out instances of superiority to our southern neighbours rather than accepting our similiarities.
7. What is your political view? Liberal, socialistic, communistic etc.? Classical liberal with libertarian leanings. In Canada's current political culture, the best fit is the Conservative Party of Canada.
8. Which politic statements in Canada do you disagree with? I don't agree with the anti-Afghan war sentiment that dominates the issue right now: I think it is something necessary that we are doing. I'm not fond of a lot of the "stimulus" spending in the recent downturn either but can see some arguments for it.
9. Which qualities of people do you consider as rude? Any behaviour that exhibits excessive selfishness and little to no consideration of others that are effected by it. Examples would be things like skipping ahead in lines (queues), public smoking in non-designated areas especially around children, noisy behaviours.
10. Can you describe what kind of meals you usually eat? Heavy on proteins and starches. Lighter than they should be on vegetables. Lots of beef, pork and chicken. A little fish. Potatoes, rice or pasta with every meal. I'm not big on sauces but prefer natural flavours with some added spices.
11. What is, in your opinion, a typical Canadian meal? Roast beef and potatoes with green beans.
12. What do you drink in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening on workdays? Tea, water and orange juice in the mornings. Tea, iced tea, juices or soft drinks in the afternoon and evening with the odd beer or whiskey in the evenings.
13. What do you drink in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening on weekends? The same as the weekdays with a greater chance of alcohol consumption.
14. What kind of music do you prefer or do you listen to? I listen to rock and classical genres. Some folk.
15. Do you listen to Canadian artists a lot? Some but not exclusively: I don't discriminate by nationality in my musical tastes.
16. Do you think Canadian artists are internationally famous? Some are. Many aren't. Names like Anne Murray, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams and Nickelback have international renown whether we like it or not.

17. What is the first thing that comes up to your mind when you think about Holland? The Dutch immigrants who were my neighbours growing up :)
18. Do you ever listen to Dutch musicians? Not that I am aware of.
19. What do you think Canadians and Dutch have in common, culture wise? Both have Greco-Roman and Northern European influences. I don't know much specifically about Dutch culture though to comment a lot.
20. In which aspects do Canada and Holland differ, when it is about culture? The biggest thing would be linguistic. I know the impact of the World Wars of the last century is bound to have affected Holland differently: even with the number of casualties Canada lost, there is a large difference between being occupied and being a liberator. Holland also has a lot more recorded history in terms of things like art (Canada has no answer to say van Gogh). Canada's history and culture before the European colonization was largely oral and a lot has been lost. As Russ alluded our sport culture is a lot different too.
