Ten years ago, the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award was born, on the initiative of the Right Honourable Roméo Leblanc, P.C., C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., as a tribute to those who devote themselves for caring for others, for the sake of a better Canada, and a better world. The award has continued to be issued to those who show themselves to care for others in a way which enriches the lives and communities around them.

Today, on the anniversary of this important award, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada and her husband, His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond, C.C., welcomed Canadians to Rideau Hall for the presentation of ten Caring Canadian Awards, on the occasion of the award's tenth anniversary. Her Excellency proceeded to thank the recipients of the award for their services to the Canadian community, while highlighting the profound effects that such kind-hearted and caring people have on the nation, and the world.

Her Excellency the Rt. Hon. Michaëlle Jean[/color], C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.,]Nothing was more important to Mr. Leblanc than those ordinary heroes who do extraordinary work, often behind the scenes. And he was right. Lighting a spark of joy in the eyes of a sick child; giving wings to a person with a disability; raising funds for a community organization; visiting a senior citizen; listening to, accompanying, supporting women and men who are struggling or in distress.

These actions have the power to change the course of a life.

I hope that this award continues to be issued year after year, decade after decade, so that we may be given pause to consider and recognize the work that some persons do to make Canada a better, and more caring, place to live. In a time such as this, where uncertainty and fear can often be seen to plague the mindsets of a nation, it is more important than ever to ensure that we highlight the good things that are happening, in lieu of the bad. Selon moi, le Canada, c'est le meilleur pays dans le monde — nous devrions continuer de reconnaisser les bonnes choses qui sont faites par des autres pour améliorer nos vies. (¶1-1) In my opinion, Canada is the best country in this world — we should continue to recognize the good things that are done by others, to better our lives.
