Province launches interactive maps of flood-prone areas
Parts of North Shore, False Creek, Kits identified as vulnerable

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) - Parts of Kitsilano, False Creek, and the North Shore could be getting a lot soggier in the coming decades.

The BC government has released interactive maps showing what parts of the province could be vulnerable to flooding by the year 2100. They now take into account rising sea levels, which scientists generally agree will jump up to two metres by the end of the century.

An area of North Vancouver by the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge, False Creek, and Kits are identified as flood-prone areas in coming years. Water could also cut off Stanley Park and completely surround the downtown core in the case of a flood.

The risk will increase for the Southlands in Vancouver and in Delta and Richmond. But BC's dike inspector tells the Vancouver Sun there is some good news: sea levels are rising very slowly so there is a lot of time to plan for new floodplains.
