Europe has the European People's Party, comprising various centre-right parties, all pro-EU, some socially conservative, and all economically liberal or conservative.
So essentially as a whole it is a moderately socially conservative, economically liberal, and internationalist or at least pro-EU party.
I can't think of any party in Canada that meets all of these criteria. There is the Conservative Party of Canada that is somewhat socially conservative (at least in relative terms, along with individual members who are more outspoken than the official party line in favour of social conservatism), economically liberal (in favour of privatization and free trade for example), but not particularly internationalist (not particularly in favour of any kind of expansion of Canada's integration into a largeer economic and political entity such as the EU).
I know there are some in the NDP who are quite internationalist, but just as true social conservatives are marginalized in the Conservative Party, so true internationalists are equally marginalized in the NDP: just as one should not hold his breath for the Conservative Party to open up the abortion debate, so he should also not hold his breath for the NDP to to seriously discuss any kind of EU-type involvement involving Canada any time soon either. Besides, even if the NDP were more internationalist, it would still be socially liberal and economically socialist for the most part.
While liberal conservatism and internationalism seem to be able to find common ground in European politics, they seem to mix like oil and water in Canadian politics, with any kind of true internationalism being limited to the left-leaning frindges of the political spectrum.
I'd like to know from social conservatives, economic liberals and internatinalists in these forums if you think there would be room for a socially conservative, economically liberal, and interntionalist party in Canada federally.
Any thoughts on this?
