Dollarama hikes prices this summer

06/13/2012 | Erin Criger, CityNews.ca

Discount store Dollarama announced Wednesday that prices are set to increase this summer, the same day the company reported increased sales over last year.

Many items will now sell for $2.50 and $3, Dollarama Inc. said in a statement. The increase will be introduced in August, but grocery items won’t see a bump. The company said those products would be unaffected.

Other items will still retail for $0.69, $1, $1.25, $1.50 and $2. Dollarama introduced the multi-price point strategy in 2009.

First-quarter sales increased by 14.9 per cent over last year, with profits of $398 million. In 2011, the company raked in $346.3 million.

“Customers have responded very well to our multi-price point strategy,” Larry Rossy, chairman and CEO of Dollarama said in the release.

“Additional price points provide us with an opportunity to strengthen our value proposition.”

Dollarama said the profits came from an increased number of stores, good weather and higher-priced items.

The Montreal-based company has 721 locations across the country.
