Sunshine coast is nice. You get really nice sunsets through the discharge of the pulp mill across the sound.

When I came to Canada, there was no internet.

I could hardly understand or read the now obsolete newspapers.

But I went where the jobs were. I was not a lumberjack, but if it put bread and butter on my table, I became one,

After, though I was not a miner, I was ready to to go underground to put bread and butter on my table.

Then, I got a job in a factory, and from that I worked my way out to be a successful computer programmer.

ALL WITHOUT GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE!!!!

Funny I always thought it was the other way, when you head away from the green into that frozen wasteland known as ROC. Coming west you can smell salt water from Hope.

I grew up near Vancouver, (NewWestminster), and of all the surrounding cities, municipalities
etc, (right now, I would choose to live right in Vancouver.) Firstly it is beautiful, very multicultural,
lots to do, mountains close by for skiing, the ocean for fishing/swimming/lots of beaches, probably
best mountain biking in the world, wonderful hiking with breath taking views from atop.
There is nothing black hearted about vancouver at all. It is very clean and bright. Great shops to
browse and shop downtown with many multi cultural stores as well.

It is also a great sports city, if you want to participate, or raise your children to be a part of the
sport scene it's perfect, and also any of the arts as well.

If one wants to zero in on the poorer side of any city, they can, or the slums, whatever, all cities have
that to offer, but it is only a small part of vancouver, and all cities have crime, but some of the
smaller cities, per capita, have a poorer record than vancouver.
If one wants to go to the east end of vancouver and gawk at the drug scene, go ahead, but I've been
to vancouver hundreds of times as an adult, and have never walked thru the east end, i'm not interested
in staring at the poor and the drug addicts, and I'm not one, so why would I want to go there, it
is another small area compared to the whole city. If I was homeless or had to live on the street for
whatever reason, I would choose vancouver too, warmer than anywhere else in canada in the winter, they have the brains to avoid montreal or winnipeg and other freeze zones in the winter, as well as most of us here on the coast.

It is a large city, so if one doesn't want that, then it is not for them. We lived in large metropolis
areas for many years, then chose to come to vancouver island to get away from that, and it is beautiful
here too, but it is what you choose, there is something for everybody.

It's also an easy city to drive around, just don't do it in rush hour, other than that, the driving is
pleasant.

They are in the process of building city bike lanes, which encourages cycling in and out of the city,
safely.

I have no connection to any tourist organization or company, i'm just a regular person who has known
vancouver since a little child, when we use to take the street car to the beach on sundays, take the
ferry to north vancouver for a lunch, and drive up thru west vancouver to gawk at all the expensive
houses, or go out to the UBC grounds and walk around, I knew how to get around vancouver when I was
about 12 years old, and came to the city on my own many times.

If I could afford it, I would own an apartment in one of those highrises, and stay there a few times
each month, I would love it.

I was just in vancouver two weeks ago for a canucks hockey game, we walked around, had a nice dinner
out, (many great restaurants), and strolled to the game, then back to our hotel, and it's still one
of the cleanest cities I have ever been, they are proud of their city and take good care of it.

If you want a moderate rent or house price, it is not the place to go, nor is Victoria.

Russia has been claimed to have a higher crime rate than most countries in Africa but we all know that, especially if you are not black, you will have a higher chance of being kidnapped and murdered in Africa!

In in our metropolitans to some extent, most of the crime is underreported, written off under technicalities, the police avoid certain areas of town, or the locals see no need to report crime (or are unable to report it because of a lack of police infrastructure), and have to consider their status (legal or illegal resident), et al.

Crime rates are always higher in your ''bumpkim'' towns in British Columbia, namely because police presence is much larger, they can shut off the roads more easily, people trust the police more, et al, so more crime is reported even though it may just consist of spousal abuse, drunkeness in public, lewd behaviour, the rare assault, et al.

I know from personal experience, I'll take a "hick town" before staying overnight in the rough parts of Vancouver or Surrey.

Vancouver is great but expensive (I've lived west of Main St in the better part of the city all my adult life)-the eastern suburbs are just that-faceless/car choked and not really that much cheaper.

If it's a smaller place you want look to southern Vancouver Island lots of choice.

why would anyone choose to stay in 'the rough parts' of anywhere they are visiting.
high crime rate, low crime, all cities, towns etc. have crime, it's too bad, but
that is life, and always has been, just be wise, don't wander around the streets
late at night, in areas that one shouldn't be, or anywhere in the world late at night, alone.
even in the wilderness, the late night isn't a good time to wander around the bush. lol, and even out there, it is probably the two legged violence that will get you. lol

That old boy is the look and smell of money.

When Old H.R. and Kline got off the boat in Powell River on the way to buy the Pulp Mill from Stewart and Welsh he remarked to old J.V. "smells like money to Me".

I figured they left that one running as a museum piece.
