Canada's hot spot for crime — climbing 90 per cent higher than the national average — is a northern B.C. city whose population doesn't even break 100,000.

Prince George topped the list of Canadian cities with the highest crime rates, according to an annual survey released Thursday by Maclean's magazine.

The magazine said a 77,000-person city claiming the top spot is a "shameful reflection" of the fact that Canada's most violent cities are located in the country's North and West.

People aren't aware of the continuous very high un-employment in the BC Interior. In places like Prince George, it can be 20% or more out of work every fall winter and spring. More people can go to work in the various bush activities in the summer. But in the rest of the year there are so many without work, UIC and Welfare prop up so may folks, whole neighbourhoods there. We have as a society failed in making a real economy in the Interior, it has not worked. We can't seem to find a way of colonizing our province with sustainable employment in most of the Interior. What is the matter with BC?

This is not the first time Prince George has had this honour and probably won't be the last. It has this honour because many only go there between camp jobs and are looking to blow off steam in any and every way they can. In the 70s it was the drug capital of Canada.

Didn't Victoria come in at number two? That I find hard to believe.

Victoria is full of politicians and lawyers. I can see why you would expect that.
