Perhaps one of nature's most intriguing dramas, wild salmon feed everything from fishermen to Kermode bears and even the forests of BC. Salmon are a vital link in the complex and beautiful ecology of BC and other coastal areas. With the added stresses of global warming and deforestation, sea lice and other challenges caused to wild salmon by fish farms is truly a sin against one of god's best works.

Our leaders are not listening to the warnings about fish farms, profits come first - profits for friends of the Campbell government. The Campbell government corruption and collusion with corporate interests is illegal immoral and blatantly innappropriate, but they can get away with it. So they do. What can I do?

B.C. urged to ban open-net fish farms within 5 years

The NDP-dominated legislature committee on sustainable aquaculture has recommended an end to salmon farming as it's now practised along the B.C. coast.

The committee's long-awaited report tabled on Wednesday calls for a "rapid phased transition" from the current open-pen fish farms to ocean-based closed containment systems to begin immediately.

The industry would be given three years to develop the new systems, and another two years to phase them in. That would mean an end to open-net fish farms within five years.
