Moe Sihota pledges $10-million project will be rebuilt

A $10-million, 120-room hotel -- a dream project for former politician Moe Sihota -- went up in smoke in Langford Saturday, forcing three construction workers to run for their lives and 400 shoppers to be evacuated from the nearby Costco warehouse store.

No one was hurt and insurance will cover the cost of rebuilding. Still, that was little consolation for Sihota, who stood glumly on McCallum Road, outside the cordoned-off area, his hotel a smoking ruin.

"It makes you sick to your stomach when you get a call saying it burned down," said Sihota, who partnered with developers Ravi Grewal and Mel Dhaliwal on the Sheraton Four Points suburban hotel, due to open in February.

The cause of the fire, called in at 11:02 a.m., wasn't immediately known but Sihota didn't believe it to be deliberately set. "I don't think it would be suspicious. We have security around here all the time. In the year and a half we've been here, we've never had so much as a stranger walk across the site.
