RCMP in British Columbia have arrested a man they say set his estranged wife's house on fire and attacked her with a weapon.
Police in Langley, B.C., went to the scene of a house fire around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning after a woman and her two children had exited the burning house.
Police believe the former husband started the fire, entered the woman's room and attacked her before the daughter intervened and was also struck with a weapon, before they escaped the house.
The woman and her daughter were treated in hospital and are in stable condition.
Police didn't initially know if the man had left the burning building, but later Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Andre Harvey Richard, 44, on breaching no contact conditions.
Richard was arrested Thursday after police were informed of a possible impaired driver near Fernie, B.C., more than 1,000 km away.
Police expect formal charges of attempted murder to be laid later on Thursday.
