VANCOUVER - A Surrey, B.C., mom died in hospital Tuesday after being attacked outside a local rink while waiting to pick up her son from a hockey tournament on the weekend.
Julie Paskall, 53, a mother of three, was attacked about 9:30 p.m. Sunday and found unconscious in the parking lot of the Newton Arena in Surrey, just east of Vancouver.
"The motive for this unprovoked attack remains robbery with both IHIT (integrated homicide investigation team) and the Surrey RCMP continuing to work toward finding out who is responsible," Sgt. Adam MacIntosh of IHIT said.
Police said the assault on Paskall is similar to a Dec. 16 attack on a female in the same area.
Surrey RCMP are investigating the previous assault "and although the motive appears similar these two occurrences have not definitively been linked," police said in a news release.
Harbs Bains, president of the Surrey Minor Hockey Association, said Paskall was a longtime, "wonderful" volunteer for the organization.
"It was my understanding that her son was volunteering at the tournament and she was there to pick him up," Bains said. "This is just terrible."
Surrey police issued a warning Monday in the wake of the attack.
"Due to the circumstances of this tragic incident, we are asking the public to be extra vigilant," Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said in a news release.

VANCOUVER - Police in Surrey, B.C., have set up a command post outside the arena where a mother was fatally assaulted as she waited to pick her son up from a hockey tournament.
Julie Paskall, 53, a mother of three, was found beaten on Sunday in the parking lot of the Newton Arena. She was there picking up her son from the rink and police suspect robbery was the motive for the attack.
She died in hospital on Tuesday.
Police set up a command post outside the arena and on Saturday Surrey RCMP auxiliary officers will be putting up posters appealing for help from the public.
"We need the public's continued support and assistance to solve this crime," Sgt. Adam MacIntosh said in a news release.
A memorial has been set up outside the arena and many tributes to Paskall, a longtime volunteer for the Surrey Minor Hockey Association, have been posted on social media.
Randy Paskall remembered his “friend and family member of 35 years” on Facebook.
“(She) taught me much in the rules of life, made me a better person, picked me up when I was down, showed me a better road,” Paskall wrote. “Nothing can bring her back, it will never be the same without her, no matter what happens after this. Let us weep but not lose strength or most of all who we are.”
Police say anyone who has information about Paskall’s murder should call the tipline at 1-877-551-4448 or e-mail ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. If you wish to remain anonymous you can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a tip at Solvecrime.ca.
