The making of the Top Gear Patagonia special has been in the news a lot recently after Clarkson, Hammond and May were driven out of Argentina by a violent Argie mob who didn't look too kindly upon some "offensive" numberplates on the boys' cars.
The Argentine ambassador to Britain, Alicia Castro, wrote to the BBC's director of television Danny Cohen and demanded he "apologise" and not show the Patagonia special on TV.
So, of course, the BBC last night showed Part 1 of the Patagonia special on TV.....
Top Gear
Patagonia Special, Part 1
Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take three V8-engined sports cars on a gruelling 1600-mile journey through the spectacular landscapes of Patagonia in Chile and Argentina. Along the way they encounter rough roads, collapsed bridges, broken bones and a cow as they press onwards against the odds in a quest to reach Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, where they will attempt to play car football. Ushuaia is where the Belgrano set sail during the Falklands War before being sunk by HMS Conqueror, so there is much anti-British sentiment in the town.
We have to wait until tonight to glimpse the lynch mob. The first part of the Top Gear Patagonia Special last night failed to deliver much in the way of controversy, having kicked up a huge media storm back in October when presenters and crew arrived back from Argentina with tales of being run out of the country.
But there were other diversions. Plenty of them. Clarkson himself tweeted last night: “Tonight is really normal Top Gear. Tomorrow night is where it all goes bonkers.”
Tonight's part two is when it all kicks off
