1080p is the shorthand label for a high definition TV video display mode, it means 1080 horizontal lines, and progressive scan as opposed to interlaced or interleaved scan, which would be 1080i. Progressive means essentially that it takes only one pass to refresh every line on the screen, interlaced refreshes every second line on two passes. It's a commercial broadcasting standard for TV, nothing necessarily to do with camera resolutions, and yes, it is the highest definition available for TV, and double yes, NASA and astronomers and whatnot have much higher resolution equipment. So do I, my computer monitor's display will go to 1680 lines and my DSLR goes to 3872 lines.
