telus optik

For those looking to get the new telus optik, be aware that the router that they provide and require, will not stream video from a wireless source using the xbox they give and promote when you sign a 2 year contract. This in a known issue to Telus, yet they still advertise it, and sell the feature to new customers. If you think that you can use your exsisting router to solve the problem, you are wrong, as your tv signal won't work.

So you are saying that the router they provide you will not allow the xbox 360 they provide you with to stream video from the net?

I can think of a few things:

-Disable routing functions on the "router" & use it in modem mode. Then, attach your router and allow it to do the routing.
-Enable Port Forwarding
-Contact Microsoft
-Check dslreports.com

Telus just upgraded me to Optik, from their glitchy-as-hell Minerva platform. No contract, and a total savings to me of 30% from what I was paying before. of course, no contract means no x-box, but I can live without it.

I'm getting the Optik upgrade Sept. 10. I'll be paying the same price as before because I ordered a couple of extra movie channels. I signed a 3 year contract and I get a free laptop computer. Thank you Telus.

How long have you been with Telus?

Is this sort of similar to Mickey$oft's Canadian commercials flogging Windows7 using the claim that its Windows Media Centre would give one "...... access to hundreds of internet movies, tv programs, videos, etc., all of which can be easily wirelessly connected to your tv set from your computer......"? Which simply ain't possible seeing as everything they list is blocked to Canadian ISPs!

I dunno... Why the need for contracts? If you get what you're promised and paying for and good reliable service, you'll pay the bill each month. That's the way Bell Canada provided land phone lines for decades.

When the big three bring in a la carte channel choices, no contracts & get rid of that horrendous electronic so called 'customer service' phone answering system, maybe I'll look at what they're each offering. ITMT, back to building my handy dandy little digital tv antenna, probably won't work but it it makes me feel like I'm beating the system. LOL

The contract is just so they can guarantee you'll pay for your x-box or laptop. lol.

I must say though, I'm surprised their media management company hasn't signed in to tell you they'll fix your issues yet. They were pretty on the ball last time someone complained about telus on here.

About 2 years.

You're right, their signal is spotty. Hopefully this Optik system will fix the problem.

because you're in the same area, I will tell you.... Shaw is phoning around, offering unlimited north american calling, the top speed net connection, and the digital tv with PVR, HBO, and the Movie Central channels, for $109 a month all bundled together. Sit down, and crunch the numbers... if it is significantly cheaper than your Telus package, phone, ask to speak to their customer loyalty department, and explain that you'd save money if yuo pay out yuor contract with them and go with shaw instead.... they'll cut your bill down for you if it's much above shaw's. And tell them, shaw's offering you the movie package, etc. Seriously, they hacked my bill by 30% the other day.

I don't know what you're talking about dude, I got Xbox installed with my Optik service one week after it launched and it's been awesome! being able to access the DVR recordings from anywhere is the BEST feature ever, man. my video has been great and I can even rent video on demand!

I don't know what's going on with your modem, but maybe you need to factory reset it or something? TELUS would probably send you a new one if it wasn't working right.

peace

That's quite a savings. It would put me very close to Shaw's offer.

I wonder if Shaw has improved their service in 2 years. The annoying pop up windows and blatant advertising drove me nuts.

Thanks for the friendly tip neighbor.

I guess their search bot is on phone duty?

Seriously though, they did that?

Wish Rogers would. They're still charging us for a cell phone contract that expired three months ago. After hours on the web and even more on their ridikilus 'customer - we run you in circles - service' automated phone setup, my husband resorted to good ol' fashioned registered snail mail with copies to appropriate Ministries, etc. About a week later the one a day phone calls started to come in from a Rogers rep, always when he's out & she refuses to speak to me about it. Hmph! Bang goes our good credit rating! Ho hum! :::back to the DIY digital tv antenna with even more enthusiasm:::

you can stream if your computer with media center on it is wired into your network, but the issue arises when it is wireless. Media center is unable to detect the extender with this setup.

Does the WIFI work on a different IP range? Your router could have a "guest" mode where wireless runs on a separate IP range.

Just to follow up Karrie, my wife called Telus and they reduced the bill by $78 per month!!! That's a $936 savings per year. And she gets to keep the laptop. Whoop whoop! Can't thank you enough.
