I'm so glad I don't live in Calgary

SNOW for May 27, 2010! What ever happened to planting your garden May 24th weekend???

CALGARY - The forecast for Calgary and area quickly became a lot whiter Thursday night with a snowfall warning issued by Environment Canada.
The agency is predicting that 10 to 20 centimetres of snow will fall overnight into Friday morning.
Environment Canada said two factors are mainly responsible for the shift to a snowier forecast: a disturbance moving into Northern Montana which is spreading significant amounts of moisture across Southern AlbertaCombined with a moderate northeasterly flow at lower levels gradually injecting cooler air into the system.
Snowfall amounts as high as 20 cm are possible especially in the foothills and over higher terrain, Environment Canada said. Due to warm ground temperatures much of the snow will initially melt however most areas can still expect to see 10 cm of snow on the ground by Friday morning.
The weather will be a bit more moderate in the Brooks and Lethbridge areas with Environment Canada predicting that significant snow is not expected due to slightly warmer temperatures.

I'm also glad I don't live in Calgary, but not because of the weather.

I have other reasons also but today - it's because of the weather!

Last I heard, snow could be coming to Regina on Sunday. As long as it's not very deep,
would I look too insane out mowing my lawn in a snowstorm? I've been avoiding it due to
the rain the last (most of) a week now.

It would make for some good pictures, anyway.

Yeah, nothing like the prairie climate: mow your lawn one day, out with a snowblower the next. But at this time of year I switch to what I've heard called the God method of snow removal: God put it there, He can take it away.

We've had rain but not too much. Four out of five grandkids are going camping tomorrow. Two for boys club, two for girls club. Fifth one is spending the night with us. The kids are packing up beach sandals, swim suits and the like. It's not going to be hot but - it's not going to snow! Life is pretty good here on the West (wet) Coast!

Well when you live at nearly a mile above sea level you should expect ****ty weather at any instant.

I'd wager a lunch that 50% of people in Calgary have no idea they live so high up in the thin air.

You mean they are starving for oxygen to the brain? That would explain a few things.

That's a strong possibility Cliffy but the altitude difference from Regina to Calgary is significant. For instance I've noticed it takes 1 1/3 tanks of fuel to drive from here to there but I can make from Calgary to Regina on one tank.

You'd probably lose. Its a city-trivia fact that Calgary has the 2nd highest elevation of major cities in North America, with only Denver being higher. The elevation can also produce headaches in some people caused by rapid changes in barometric pressure that people there refer to as "weather headaches".

Summers in Calgary are short, but the good thing is that snowfalls are getting lighter in summer

2nd is a bit of a stretch, Cheyenne, Santa Fe and Laramie are all a lot higher than Calgary. I believe Laramie is over 7000'.

The weather is only ****ty if you let it get to you. I don't unless we have non stop rain for a couple of weeks and that is extremely rare. I don't like snow and cold so I'll take the rain anyday. It did get cold last night though. I woke up freezing in the night. Was tempted to get up and turn some heat on but drifted off again so I guess it wasn't that cold.

I saw that on the weather map. Lucky you. We could use some of that and I hope we get it soon. I'm always hoping for hot weather to complain about!

It's full moon. It always gets chilly on a full moon. I've got nothing against spring rain especially when it means food in the fall.

Just as long as you get a long warm spell. Otherwise, too much water and the food just rots in the ground. That snow that was to hit Calgary was coming with some really weird cold front and that's probably why all of us got a little chilly last night. I hope it doesn't ruin the kids camping weekend. Weather never has much effect on kids anyway.

We've had plenty of tanning weather already and this is a typical mid/late May cold snap. We'll be back to mid to upper 20's in a few days and then it will really get warm which I love. My winter was only 7 weeks this year and that has really been a plus.

Yes but you have been out of the country. Ours was only that long and we didn't go anywhere.

What are you complaining about

AB has 2 seasons - Winter and construction - other have to deal with 4 seasons

Then we have mostly blue skies.

The we also have a benign dictatorship that looks after us all.

Really ungrateful.

Don't let Ed hear that - you could be DucketSized - without the half mil of course.

In my 40 years in Alberta, I never minded the cold in winters, but I almost always hated the way snow complicated things, all the shoveling, de-icing, driving and even walking more slowly and carefully, etc.

The only time I liked it was as a kid, when I was too young to have to shovel, and especially after Dad bought us our little ski-doo...

The nice thing about Calgary is you only have to shovel a couple times each year: most of it melts shortly after it lands. When you get farther north, shoveling becomes more frequent...

meh. The part of calgary I live in, the snow takes about a week to melt off the sidewalk, and wulfie68, is there an age restriction for this site?

Go to the Maritimes - lots of heavy wet snow - You and a shovel.

oh I wish that the snow would melt already...

OK back on topic: It may not be the best time to move until the snow melts
