Red Deer Advocate - Politicians say progress made in making oilsands environmentally friendly

CALGARY — A new report released by an energy consulting group in the United States suggests the Canadian government will have a tough time trying to balance environmental responsibility with the energy security increased oilsands production can provide.

Provincial and federal politicians say they’re fully aware of the concerns, but will keep trying to persuade the world that Alberta is doing all it can to make the oilsands environmentally friendly

One can only achieve environmental progress if you have economic progress. Frankly, I think as a country we’ve done a pretty exceptional job in striking that balance,” said Environment Minister Jim Prentice while attending an event in Calgary Tuesday.

“There’s always room for improvement and we’ll continue to do that.”

Johnnny, when that US Consulting group represents companies that own 99.9% of shares by US companies instead of the present share holding of today, you will see those "tough times ahead" disappear and Alberta lose all its royalties to any resources it has.. Then and only then will Oil really flow from those Tar Sands and increased oilsands production..

The tar sands are being spun the wrong way. Hippies all know how bad oil spills are because oil seeps into the ground, hurt animals and make granola taste bad. Alberta is only cleaning up an old oil spill. Sure it causes some problems in the short term but in the long term the ground will be cleaned up and the environment better for it. In the future hippies could even have organic farms there.

The oil sands is a horrendous thing. Those acres and acres of sludgy water are going to haunt Alberta (and the NWT) for years to come.

But long term thinking has never been our strong suit, so I'm not going to worry.

Well. who would have thought that Nuclear Power would ever be the buzz word it is? Technology does change many things over time. Money in the right pocket helps too.
I'm a sceptic-as soon as the Natives in the area are assured of pots of money for the chiefs, and jobs for everyone that wants one, then the environment will once again become expendable.
