tks petro's i'll check these out locally b4 i head west, i messed up royally here in new brunswick lost license and job over 4 beer, im learning a rough lesson, my family is paying for my mistake, so here goes the next few years...

They look down on flatlanders allmost as much as Albertans and it's gotten pretty bad now.
Tickets dont mean much,if your working on any oilsands property you will go through two weeks of their specific training,they get paid for training you so you have to do it their way.
I did the P.I.T.S. training before I got anywhere near there and they said it wasnt good enough,their training was a joke compared to P.I.T.S.(petroleum institute training service) which you need to work anywhere in the normal oilpatch outside of fort macnewfy.
If you want to work specifically for one of the oilsands giants you will need your grade 12,if you dont have it there's lots of folks who will forge you one up for 50 bucks.
Best thing I can suggest is have a contact up there who will put you up for a month or three untill you get settled or hopefully get a camp job.You might want to look up CEDA on the net and apply online as they run most fuel and water truck contracts up there and will fly you home after 24 days working,they also supply camp and not all outfits do.
Fort mac is not a nice place IMO and I hope to never go back there,it's greedy people "living the dream" which seems to equate to having a paycheque while doing as little as possible to earn it.
There's good people up there but most you will find are the local Albertan's who have a little pride in the province and the environment,
The drive from fort mac****hole to the oilsands is harsh,it can take you an hour to go the 28 kilometers to the first site which is suncor and you will be dodging cig. butts and garbage from the motorists in front of you all the way and it is bumper to bumper starting at 5:50 am every morning.
I find most newfys will cut your throat to get one of their family members your job or one of their friends.
I have a lot of good newfy friends but not up there.Most wouldnt last an hour on an Albertan oil rig.

tks so much, these are all good tips guys, i just wanna go to work and get home from time to time, all the other drama i can do without, i'm not a drug addict, or anything like that, i take pride in a job well done and like knowning i've earned my keep so i'll not give up easily i'll push forward and see what comes of it, tks again for the info people...merry xmas aswell...

Hi, how hard is it to find a camp job for a Heavy Equipment Operator? I have almost 10 years experience and am hoping to find a camp job that will fly me back and forth, are things slow out there right now?

The main established oilsands outfits like suncor dont fly you or provide camp,they would rather you move up there.Some of the newer ones do fly like albian and a few others because thats the only way in.Contractors are the ones that provide flights and camp to easterners.You can search out the 955 operating engineers fort mac website and apply there as thats all contractors and you dont really have to be in the union to get a job they post if after 2 days and no one from the union is qualified and bids on it..You also have to have a grade 12 or ged for the big outfits,not so with contractors.
It's definately booming like you wouldnt believe and only going to get bigger with all the new projects coming onstream.
Seems anyone who has taken an HEO course can get on as an operator for the big outfits,not so allways with the contractors as theres lots of guys with 40 or more years experience and they set the bar.

I have a lot of relatives who work there or have worked there, remember perception is often more
abundant than truth. Putting that aside, if it was anything like the Peace Country was thirty years
ago, a lot of me make big money and very few end up holding onto it.
Be prepared for a culture shock for sure.

Hello folks,
I went to class for my H2S Alive certificate with Enform this past weekend. I have 6 years in general labourer with concrete factory and I was laid off due to the slow economy in Ontario.
I am interest in obtaining more information and sites on where to look and I would prefer employment opportunities with companies that do fly in and fly out since I am moving to the city for a year.
I am well aware you need WHMIS but that's obtainable online what I see but CPR is in-room classroom. I have a valid G license and so on.
Where should I look because I called one company that was given to me by someone in Enform class but they wanted me to drive from Ontario to Alberta with 20 days on and 10 days off. Leaving me with 2 days to stay in Ontario if I drove back and forth or probably $2000 to fly and rent a car to a resort to stay that would be paid by them.
What are my options here? I am interested in input from all of you.

Other then your first aid and cpr you will have to take all the courses from your company you will work for,they all use different places and all are specific to them as it's usually a family member or friend thats running the safety place they send you to.
Just google IUOE955 fort mac and send in a resume.Lots of jobs,dont worry if your not union,the more new members they get the better.

I had offers from SKS and Carson energy in Sask a month ago to go pipelining there,they will bypass Alberta soon in gas and oil production.
The best thing is the eastern nepotism hasnt invaded the industry there like in Alberta so you would get in at just the right time.
Plus real estate is Sask. is still fairly cheap and they have some beautifull lakeside properties for sale that would cost a 1/4 of what they would in Alberta or less.

Alright, thanks guy. I have WHMIS certificate now with St. John Ambulance and will be doing a 2 days course with them on Wednesday/Thursday.
Now, I am updating my resume and crossing fingers for something to come around soon.
