Do you want Alberta to increase spending on health research?

We can discuss reasons for or against increasing health research.

My reasons why it should be increased are, for one, that the opportunity has arrived. The NDP government seems to be unsure about what sectors to diversify the economy into.

And, health is a timeless industry, and health research generates major business. It is an innovative and economical engine that will be around for the foreseeable future.

It also produces products that are extremely valuable to ourselves, families and friends. A cure for cancer or a better treatment for Alzheimer's are products we could all benefit from, but we do not benefit from the natural resources that are exported to other countries.

Don't be stupid, anything AB researchers do will just employing a bunch of immigrants to spend our tax money.

Anything the NDs do is a waste of tax money.

ND's are desperate to find something they can do so their time in office won't be considered a complete waste of time

So your reason for not increasing money spent on health research is because it will only employ a bunch of immigrants living in AB?

Why would only foreign researchers be hired?

What does this reply have to do with my original post?

Because there are few qualified people in that field living in Alberta. There is also no point in reinventing the wheel. There is plenty of health research happening in Canada right now.

No, Alberta's entire budget should go into oil industry subsidies.

Why would you choose oil over health research? Oil prices are falling due to emerging energy markets and environmental concerns. Meanwhile cancers, heart diseases, Alzheimer's, etc are still a major problem and thus money maker.

Many students don't get to do research because of the limited funding and facilities, so that's where the provincial spending comes in.

And most health research is happening in Ontario and B.C.

Oil is down because we are killing the Russian economy.

UofA is the place to be for Canadian bionanotechnology, and nanobiology

No, it's because of shale oil, and other emerging energy markets are only going to make it worse.

See, Forbes Welcome

Are you talking about NINT? Either way, there is much science to be done and therefor much profit to be made. The question is whether or not we want to be a larger part of this inherently valuable and timeless industry.

LOL that is funny. Kerogen is great for fuel but not much more. More than half a barrel of oil goes into products other than fuel.

What did you think your blue box was made of? The clothes you wear, your shoes, car, home, pharmaceuticals, dentures, shampoo, pit stick, chewing gum, and on and on?

Shale oil is all over the world and its market share is expected to keep climbing. You can find support for this claim anywhere on the internet.

Electric vehicles, solar energy, wind energy, etc. are also expected to increase in market share.

Face it; oil days are ending.

If half of a whole decreases, then the whole decreases too. But that's not what I want to discuss.

We have the opportunity to move on from a resourced-based economy to a service and knowledge based economy. Many countries now can get shale oil and can manufacture anything for costs that we won't get ahead with.

We need to move onto more advanced services and technologies such as medicine because not any country can.
