The Calgary Zoo has added a baby gorilla to its ranks.
On Wednesday evening, 15-year-old Western lowland gorilla mom Kioja gave birth to an offspring, whose gender has yet to be disclosed.
Staff are closely observing signs of bonding and nursing, says the zoo.
Sired by dad Kakinga, 37, the baby is the zoo’s first gorilla birth in eight years.
The arrival has temporarily closed the TransAlta Rainforest building.
In the months leading up to the birth, Kioja underwent a mom boot camp where she was schooled in holding a baby and undergoing ultrasounds.
