Owner of 'Afro Man' speaks out: I couldn't care for him anymore

The owner of a dog found abandoned near Morley with casts on its two broken front legs denied causing those injuries or leaving the animal there.

Mohammed Nadeem Dar said the dog — since dubbed Afro Man — was injured in an accident and since he was unable to care for it following that, he later gave the dog to a couple outside a south Calgary SPCA office to be euthanized and doesn’t know how it ended up west of the city.

Meanwhile, Alberta SPCA spokesman Roland Lines confirmed an investigation was launched Tuesday morning after receiving a complaint.

“We are trying to figure out what happened,” he said.

“And see whether or not there’s a reason for us to be involved.”

Dar at first denied the injured dog was his when contacted by the Sun.

“No sorry, that dog that was found is not mine,” he wrote in an email response.

“It looked very similar to mine.”

Dar later admitted the dog — which he said was bought in March and named Scoot — was his and he brought it to Calgary on Friday to have it euthanized.

However, he was too emotionally distraught and instead he said he gave it to a man and a woman he didn’t know outside an SPCA along with $500 cash and asked them to take it inside to be put down.

Dar said he is recovering from surgery and was unable to care for the dog properly or pay for necessary surgery he said would cost upward of $10,000.

He said the dog broke its legs last Tuesday when it “rolled the wrong way” and fell off a one-metre high ledge onto a cement step in his Invermere backyard.

The eight month old pure bred puli — named Afro Man by Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue workers now caring for him — was found Sunday near Morley sitting on a blanket next to a bag of food.

Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue dog behaviourist Rory O’Neill said she was contacted Tuesday by people who knew Dar and identified him as the owner.

She said she’d like to see the person who dumped the dog charged by RCMP.

Despite the ordeal he’s been through, O’Neill said the pooch is in good spirits.

“He’s happy and content but he has to lay down most of the time because he can’t really walk,” she said.

“He’s happy to get attention, he’s so loving and very affectionate.”

Once healed, O’Neill said she will find a new home for Afro Man and the rescue group is now collecting donations to pay for surgery to put plates in Afro Man’s legs at Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue | Calgary & Alberta Animal Rescue

Dog ditched in Morley, "Afro Man," to undergo surgery on two broken front legs Thursday

Afro Man is set to undergo surgery on Thursday.

The pooch found near Morley with two broken front legs will have his casts taken off and plates put in to help him heal properly.

The surgery had been set for Aug. 19, said Rory O’Neill, a dog behaviourist with Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue who is now caring for the pup, but was bumped up when vets saw how serious his injuries were. Each of Afro Man’s front legs were broken in two places each.

Thought to be eight months old, the pure bred puli was found sitting on a blanket next to a bag of food near Morley on Sunday.

The man who found him took the pooch to Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue, where he was named Afro Man because of his shaggy hair, which has since been clipped slightly so it’s not blocking his vision.

When contacted by the Sun, the dog’s owner, Mohammed Nadeem Dar said the dog got hurt when he rolled off a one-metre ledge at his Invermere property last Tuesday and landed on a cement step.

Dar said he took the dog to a vet near Invermere and had casts put on, but is recovering from surgery himself and couldn’t care for him properly. Dar said he then brought the dog to Calgary Friday to be euthanized but was too distraught and instead gave him to a couple he met outside along with $500 and asked them to have him put down.

Afro Man will be adopted once he’s on the mend, said O’Neill, which could take one to three months.

And while interest in Afro Man is high, O’Neill said she has roughly a dozen other dogs needing forever homes.

Donations are also being collected to help pay for Afro Man’s surgery — estimated to cost about $10,000 — at Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue | Calgary & Alberta Animal Rescue

Alberta SPCA has removed Afro Man, the abandoned dog with two broken legs found in Morley, from his foster home

The Alberta SPCA has seized a dog abandoned with two broken legs, angering those caring for him.

An animal rescue group says the ASPCA is barking up the wrong tree by confiscating puli puppy Afro Man from its foster caregivers.

On Tuesday, the ASPCA took Afro Man, who was found Aug. 9 west of Calgary near Morley, sitting on a blanket with a bag of food.

Both of his front legs were broken in two places and the dog underwent surgery at the Fish Creek 24-hour Animal Clinic, though the agency said it’s too early to say if any charges will be laid.

The dog was seized because it wasn’t receiving the standard of care required by his injuries, said ASPCA spokesman Roland Lines.

“It needed more intensive care than its caretakers could provide — it was not being mistreated,” said Lines, adding Afro Man is now in the care of an adoption agency.

“It’s safe and secure and receiving the veterinary care it requires — it’s a lengthy rehabilitation.”

When contacted last week by the Sun, Afro Man’s owner, Mohammed Nadeem Dar, said the dog was injured when it fell off a one-metre ledge onto cement at his Invermere, B.C. property.

He said he wasn’t able to care for the dog after having its legs placed in casts at a clinic near Invermere, and paid others to have him euthanized.

Lines said the owner had signed over guardianship of the dog to them.

The ASPCA’s seizure is “stealing” and “unethical” after being well-cared for at a Calgary foster home and receiving excellent treatment at the city clinic, said Rory O’Neill, director of Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue.

“They knew nothing about our foster care and environment, they never even asked...it’s abusive,” she said, adding the dog was seized at the vet clinic during a follow-up visit.

“It was in intensive care at the vet.”

The group had raised about $3,500 to cover a discounted $2,400 tab for surgery, with the remaining money to go towards Afro Man’s rehab, she said.

O’Neill said they planned to have him permanently adopted.

Lines couldn’t say who would be picking up Afro Man’s ongoing medical tab.
