Edmonton driver was ticketed for backing into and over a motorcycle
By Catherine Griwkowsky, Edmonton Sun First posted: Monday, June 08, 2015 04:52 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, June 09, 2015 12:28 PM EDT
Video showing a panicked new driver reversing over a motorcycle in Edmonton was on top of the "front page of the Internet" on the weekend.
A video posted to YouTube, and later made into a gif and posted to news and entertainment sharing site Reddit, shows motorcycle helmet-cam footage of a red SUV stopping in the left lane of an intersection at 87 Avenue and Anthony Henday Drive on an amber light on Saturday. The driver then quickly reverses at an angle after the light turns red and a driver turns left in front of the vehicle.
The red SUV continues reversing at an angle from the left lane into the right lane, while the motorcyclist in the right lane manages to jump off the bike as the driver hits it. After a slight pause, the SUV driver continues reversing over the entire bike, only coming to a stop with the machine lodged under it.
"The adrenaline pumping through my system was so high, I was kinda happy to not be under the car," the motorcyclist wrote.
"The car was resting on the bike, they had to lift it to get the bike from underneath."
In the post, the biker says an insurance adjuster was set to assess the damage on Monday. The user wrote the driver of the SUV has a learner's permit.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, the driver was given a $500 ticket for careless driving. Police say the collision was due to driver inexperience.
