The York University student newspaper reports that
A York student has been charged with three counts of uttering forged documents and personification for allegedly impersonating a first year University of Waterloo student at an exam.
Longhua Wang, a PhD student in the department of mathematics and statistics, was reportedly provided with a fake student I.D. and was paid $900 by Kaiwen Qian, the Waterloo student, to write her math exam for her on December 15.
The two students supposedly met through a website that matches international students with people who may be willing to write exams for them for a fee.
Waterloo was warned about potential cheating issues and tightened their security protocols.
When adjudicators in the exam circulated around the class to swipe the magnetic strips of the student cards, Wang got up and attempted to leave.
He was then arrested.
[...] Yaseen Khater, a second year electrical engineering student, says students are tired from being overworked to pay off student loans and therefore don’t put adequate amounts of time into studying.
“It was absolutely wrong for the student to cheat, but maybe this wouldn’t be an issue if we had free education,” says Khater.
