 My Opinion Re: World Press Freedom Day
I would think it to be somewhat of an irony for World Press Freedom Day to occur in the midst of our own controversy in relation to the freedom of the press: The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member for Calgary Southwest and the Prime Minister of Canada, has used his power as the head of government to put restrictions on the media in terms of accessing representatives of the Government of Canada.
Lists of reporters and questions are to be submitted to the Government for authorization and acceptance before being asked; contrary to the wishes of the parents of some of those members of our Canadian Forces abroad, and access to the proceedings of those members' repatriation are being denied to the population of Canada. Tomorrow, when we celebrate the freedom of the press, we should urge ourselves to remember that, even in our own country, these principles can sometimes be under attack.
