EDMONTON — An Edmonton nurse who stabbed her husband in the neck with an insulin-loaded needle and set a trap for him using cooking oil and syringes was put behind bars Wednesday.
Luisa Hernandez, 46, was sentenced to six months in jail, to be followed by two years of probation, after earlier pleading guilty to assault with a weapon and a rarely seen criminal charge of laying a trap with intent to cause bodily harm to a person.
Judge Larry Anderson noted the facts of the case were "quite unique" and "certainly unusual, if not bizarre" and said Hernandez was a "complicated person with a complicated past" and "distorted" personality traits.
Anderson ruled it was aggravating that the assault involved the use of a needle with some risk of bodily harm, there was a "very high degree" of forethought and it was a "breach of trust" in a domestic situation.
