TORONTO - Punishing snowstorms poised to pound southern Ontario are expected to make Toronto a white nightmare on Tuesday, Environment Canada is predicting.
The winter storm tracking from Texas is a low-pressure system expected to hit the city around midday and then intensify during the evening before ending early Wednesday. It is expected to engulf much of the province.
Environment Canada said the monster weather system will lead to heavy snowfall and rain, along with strong winds.
“Strong northeasterly winds will also (deliver) blowing snow, especially in exposed areas and along the Lake Ontario shoreline due to gusts of 70 km per hour,” Environment Canada said Monday.
The super storm has the potential to dump between 15 and 30 centimetres of snow on affected areas. Freezing rain and ice pellets are also in the monster mix.
Travellers should be be ready to make alternate plans -- depending on driving conditions, the storm warning statement said.
“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” Environment Canada said.
